Frigidaire Dishwasher i20: Water Refuses to Leave the Tub
Can You Keep Running Cycles?
No. With i20 active, dirty water sits in the tub after every attempted cycle. The drain pump runs for its four-minute timeout, fails to empty the tub, and halts. Running more cycles adds water on top of what is already pooled. If you open the door, expect standing water at the tub floor.
Short-term option: Bail the standing water with a cup or use a wet-dry vacuum through the door opening. This lets you access the filter basket at the tub bottom for inspection.
Do You Have the Right Tools?

The Complete Drain Path
Understanding where a blockage can occur helps you find it systematically:
Tub sump > filter basket > drain pump inlet > pump impeller > check valve > drain hose > air gap or disposal connection > household drain
A blockage or failure at any point produces i20. The board knows water did not leave but cannot tell you where.
Working Backward from the Sink
Check 1: Garbage disposal connection. If your drain hose connects to a disposal, run the disposal for ten seconds to clear food buildup. On new installations, verify the disposal knockout plug was removed. Disposals ship with a solid plastic plug in the dishwasher drain port.
Check 2: Drain hose. The hose must rise to at least 20 inches above the floor before descending to the drain connection, creating a high loop that prevents backflow. Disconnect the hose end and blow through it. If blocked, remove both ends and flush with hot water. Solidified grease in the vertical section is the usual obstruction.
Check 3: Filter basket and sump. Remove the lower rack. Lift out the cylindrical fine filter and the flat coarse filter underneath. Clean under running water. Inspect the sump cavity for broken glass, fruit pit seeds, label adhesive sheets, and small bones.
Check 4: Drain pump. If everything above is clear, the pump has failed. Listen during a drain attempt. A high-pitched whir means the motor runs but the impeller is jammed or detached from the shaft. Silence means the motor has failed electrically or its connector is loose.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Drain Pump Replacement
Part numbers: 154580301 (standard Frigidaire) or 5304519906 (Gallery). Cost: $35-$80.
- Pull the breaker and close the supply valve. Remove the kick plate.
- Place towels under the pump. Disconnect the drain hose from the pump outlet barb.
- Disconnect the two-pin electrical connector.
- Rotate pump counterclockwise on bayonet mounts, or remove three screws on screw-mount models.
- Clean debris from the sump port above.
- Install new pump with fresh gasket. Ensure the gasket seats evenly before locking.
- Reconnect hose and electrical. Restore power. Press Cancel/Drain to verify.
Gallery vs. Standard Drain Systems
Gallery models use a dedicated drain pump separate from the wash pump. Standard models combine both into a single motor with a diverter valve that switches between wash and drain modes. On standard models, a seized drain impeller can also affect wash pressure. On Gallery models, the wash system continues functioning even with a failed drain pump.

FAQ
Can I force a drain cycle? On some models, pressing and holding Cancel/Drain for three seconds initiates a manual drain. If the pump motor works but cycle sequencing is confused, this clears standing water.
Why does i20 come and go? Intermittent i20 usually points to grease in the drain hose. Hot cycle water partially melts grease, allowing drainage. Between uses, grease re-solidifies. Flush the hose with boiling water.
I replaced the pump but i20 persists. Check the drain hose connection under the sink. Also verify you removed the shipping cap from the new pump outlet.
