That's useful, because it means a persistent smell points you upstream to a fitting, and fittings are exactly where a leak is easy to find and confirm.
When it's a real leak#
Don't touch switches, use a phone indoors, or light anything. Turn the wall shutoff a quarter turn to close it, open doors and windows, leave, and call the gas utility from outside — they check at no charge. Only trace a faint, single-source odor yourself once the gas is off.

Trace it to a joint#
The flex connector behind the range is the usual suspect; it loosens over time and especially after the range has been pulled out to clean. Brush a mix of dish soap and water over the connector, its unions, and the manifold fittings, and watch for a cluster of growing bubbles — that's your leak. Never seal a flare fitting with pipe tape. If the smell sits at the knobs even with everything off, a worn surface valve may be weeping; if it comes from the oven with the range cold, the oven safety valve may be seeping. Both are replaced rather than cleaned.
Before the holidays#
The pre-holiday deep clean is when a range gets slid out and the connector gets bumped loose — the most common way a leak starts. After you push the range back, run the soap test on the connection before the first big meal. If a faint odor lingers once the connector and valves check out, book a visit for a proper leak test.
