Dacor Gas Stove Uneven Flame: Causes & Fix

Start at the burner#

For a single misbehaving burner, the fix is almost always local:

1. Lift the cap and head and soak them in warm soapy water.
2. Clear every port with a straight pin — never a toothpick, which can snap and jam a port.
3. Dry both pieces fully; leftover water leaves a burner spitting.
4. Reseat the cap dead flat and give it a light spin — any wobble means it's sitting proud and skewing the flame.

Let the flame tell you the rest#

• Tall on one side, low on the other — blocked ports or a crooked cap; the cleaning above handles it.
• Yellow and lazy — too little air, from a fouled head or an air shutter set wrong.
• Roaring and lifting off the ports — too much air, the opposite adjustment.

A steadily yellow, sooting flame is the one to respect — incomplete combustion can put out carbon monoxide, so don't keep cooking on it.

When it isn't just the burner#

If a burner stays yellow after a genuine clean, its air shutter needs adjusting — a precise, gas-technician task, and a must after any propane conversion. And if every burner runs weak together, stop cleaning ports and look upstream: a shutoff not fully open, a kinked flex line, or a conversion whose orifices were never matched to the fuel.

Before the holiday cooking#

Even heat matters most when you're holding a low simmer for a sauce or reduction over the holidays. Give the burners a clean-and-reseat before the season — ten minutes restores most flames. If one stays yellow after cleaning, or several run weak at once, have the shutter and supply pressure checked with a visit.

When to hand it off#

Port cleaning and cap reseating are fair game at home. Air-shutter tuning, orifice work, and anything involving gas pressure belong with a licensed technician, especially on a premium range you'd rather not have burning rich.
