Which one is it?#

Judge by strength and source. Strong and everywhere, with the range off, is the dangerous kind — treat it as a leak and leave. Faint and clearly coming from a single burner or a joint you can point to is the kind you can safely check once the gas is shut. When in doubt, treat it as the dangerous kind.

If it's the dangerous kind#

Don't flip switches, use a phone indoors, or light anything. Close the wall shutoff a quarter turn, open doors and windows, leave, and call the gas utility from outside — they'll check at no charge.

Tracing the faint kind#

On these premium sealed-burner ranges the faint leaks are almost always at joints or an unlit port:

• A burner not fully lit — a knob a hair off "off," or a cap seated crooked so a ring lights unevenly, lets raw gas out the dark ports. Confirm knobs off and reseat the cap flat.
• The flex connector behind the range loosens with time and after the range is pulled out to clean.
• A worn surface valve can weep a faint, steady odor at the knobs even when closed.
• The oven safety valve — a smell from the oven with everything off points here.

Brush soapy water on the connector, its unions, and the manifold fittings and watch for bubbles; never seal a flare fitting with pipe tape.

Before the holidays#

The pre-holiday deep clean is when a range gets slid out and the flex connector gets bumped loose — the most common start of a leak. After you reseat the range, run the soap test on the connection before the first big meal. If a faint smell lingers once you've checked knobs, caps, and the connector, book a visit for a proper leak test.

About carbon monoxide#

Raw natural gas carries no carbon monoxide, but a burner burning incompletely — yellow and sooty — does. A leak is mainly an explosion and suffocation hazard, so keep both a gas detector and a CO detector in the kitchen; they guard different dangers.
