Why a glass cooktop arcs#
Unlike a gas burner, a Bosch electric cooktop hides its heat source under a sealed glass-ceramic surface, so arcing means electricity is jumping where it shouldn't. That happens when the barrier between live parts and the outside world breaks down — a cracked surface, a failing element, or a shorting coil. Because the whole top is energized in normal use, any breach turns into a spark you can see through the glass.
Cracked SchottCeran glass (most common)#
Bosch uses SchottCeran glass-ceramic. A crack — from thermal shock, a dropped pan, or dragging cast iron — opens a path for spills and steam to seep down to the element terminals, and moisture on live terminals arcs. Any crack on a powered cooktop is dangerous; the surface must be replaced, not patched, and it has to seat and seal correctly to keep moisture out.

Damaged radiant element#
Under each cooking zone is a coiled radiant element sitting in a metal tray. When the element sheath is damaged, the coil can arc against that tray, showing as bright flashes visible through the glass and often a sharp snapping sound. A damaged element is replaced as a unit — never run a zone that flashes.
Induction coil fault#
On Bosch induction models there is no glowing coil at all; the power comes from an induction coil beneath the glass. These can develop internal shorts that produce buzzing or arcing noises and throw an error such as E01. Induction faults sit on high-voltage electronics and are strictly a professional repair.
