If the smell is strong, treat it as a leak#
Don't touch light switches, phones, or flames. Turn the wall shutoff a quarter turn to close it, open doors and windows, leave, and call the utility — they inspect at no charge. Everything below is only for a faint odor you can safely trace to one spot.
Trace it by location#
Where you smell the gas narrows the cause faster than a parts list:
- At a lit burner, mostly. A ring lit on one side, or a knob resting a touch off "off," lets raw gas slip out the dark ports. Confirm knobs fully off and clean the brass cap and ports so the burner lights evenly all the way around.
- At an off knob, constant and faint. An older Bertazzoni surface valve with a worn seat weeps slightly even closed, giving a steady whiff at the control panel. That valve is replaced, not cleaned.
- Behind the range. The metric flex connector and its unions are the classic leak point, especially after the range has been pulled out to clean. Brush soapy water on every joint and watch for bubbles; never seal a flare fitting with tape.
- From the oven, everything off. The oven safety valve should stay shut until the igniter is hot. A seeping safety valve smells from the oven vent with the range cold and needs replacing.

Why Bertazzoni is a little different#
These ranges are built to European standards with Italian valves and metric fittings, so a connector or adapter that is close-but-not-right can weep. Brass burner caps also have to seat precisely; a cap dropped back tilted after cleaning can leave ports partly blocked, which reads as both a bad flame and a faint raw-gas smell.
Before the holidays#
The deep clean before a big meal is when a range gets slid out and the flex fitting gets bumped — the single most common way a leak starts. After you push the range back, run a soapy-water check on the connector before you cook. If the odor lingers once you've checked the knobs, caps, and connector, stop guessing and book a visit for a proper leak test of the valves and fittings.
