First, Make It Safe#
An oven that will not turn off is a fire hazard, so kill the circuit breaker immediately. For gas models, also close the gas supply valve. That removes the danger and gives you a safe machine to diagnose. Most likely, the cause is a control-board relay that has welded shut and is holding the heating element energized, or on a gas range a control knob physically stuck off its Off position. A shorted temperature sensor telling the board to keep heating is the third possibility. Why the Relay Welds#
On electric Amana ovens, the control board switches the heating element through a relay, and a power surge can weld that relay's contacts closed. Once welded, the relay passes current to the element no matter what the board commands, so the oven keeps heating even when you press Off — which is exactly why the panel may look dead or unresponsive while the element stays hot. This is the most common version of the fault, and it is why the board is the part that gets replaced. A surge protector on the circuit is the simplest way to prevent a repeat once it is fixed.
The Sensor and the Knob#
A shorted temperature sensor (WPW10181986) is the subtler electric-side cause: it reports the wrong temperature to the board, which then keeps calling for heat trying to reach a target it thinks it has not met. It is an inexpensive part and testable with a meter. On gas ranges, the cause is usually mechanical — a control knob and valve stem that no longer return to the Off detent, so gas keeps flowing to the burner even though you turned it.
