Amana Gas Stove Burner Won't Ignite: Causes & Fix

Know your Amana range first#

Amana is Whirlpool's value line, and the AGR and ACR ranges you find in apartments and rentals share the same building-block gas system: spark electrodes at each surface burner, one spark module feeding all of them, and a glow-bar hot-surface igniter for the oven. That standardization is good news — the failure points are few and the parts are common.

Cooktop: clicks but no flame#

If the burner sparks but gas never lights, work in this order:

• Dry everything. A boil-over or a damp cleaning leaves moisture that shorts the spark. Pull the cap and head, dry them, and let the electrode air out.
• Clear the ports. Clean each port with a straight pin — never a toothpick, which can snap off inside. Reseat the cap flat so gas reaches the electrode.
• Check the electrode gap. The tip should sit roughly 1/8 inch from the burner. A cracked ceramic or a wide, corroded gap sparks weakly; light corrosion cleans off, but a cracked electrode is replaced.

If no burner clicks when you turn any knob, the spark module that serves them all has failed rather than a single igniter.

Oven: glows but won't light#

The oven burner is protected by a safety valve that only opens once the hot-surface igniter draws enough current. A good igniter climbs from dark to bright orange within about 30 to 60 seconds and reads roughly 40 to 400 ohms; over 400 ohms it has drifted weak. A weak igniter is the classic slow decline — it still glows, so it looks fine, but it can no longer pull the valve open, and the burner never fires. Hot-surface igniters typically last three to five years, while the solid-state cooktop spark igniters go seven to ten or more.

• Gas supply. Confirm the shutoff behind the range is fully open and that other gas appliances work.
• Wiring. Loose spade connectors or rodent-chewed insulation behind the range cause intermittent ignition.

Ahead of the cooking season#

A burner that "works most of the time" is a igniter on its way out, and it will pick the busiest cooking day to quit. If your oven takes longer and longer to light through the fall, replace the igniter before the holidays rather than nursing it.
