Whirlpool Gas Oven Burner Won't Light? Causes
Most likely the gas oven's hot-surface igniter has degraded and no longer draws enough current to open the gas safety valve, so it glows but the burner never lights — on electric Whirlpool ovens a failed temperature sensor or bake element is the parallel no-heat cause, so confirm the igniter behavior first.
Safety before anything#
Disconnect power at the circuit breaker before inspecting an electric oven — the element circuit runs on 240V, which is lethal. On gas models, if you smell gas strongly, leave the house and call for help rather than troubleshooting. Only proceed once power is off and there is no gas odor.
How Whirlpool ovens light and heat#
Whirlpool WFE and WFG ranges and WOS and WOD wall ovens manage temperature with AccuBake, cycling the heat source to hold a set point. On a gas oven the burner only lights when a hot-surface igniter glows hot enough to draw the current that opens the gas valve; on an electric oven, the bake element heats directly under the sensor's control. Most no-light and no-heat faults live in that ignition or heating path.

Causes at a glance#
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | Share of cases | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature sensor failure | Wrong temps, no proper heat | 25% | Test the oven sensor |
| Heating element failure (electric) | No heat, dull element | 22% | Inspect the bake element |
| Gas igniter degradation (gas) | Glows but burner won't light | 20% | Replace the hot-surface igniter |
| Control board failure | Erratic or no operation | 15% | Inspect the control board |
| Door lock / self-clean stuck | Locked, won't heat after clean | 10% | Power-cycle the lock system |
| Thermal fuse / high-limit | Dead after overheating | 5% | Check the fuse and limit |
| Wiring / connection failure | Intermittent heat | 3% | Inspect element wiring |
Working through the causes#
Gas igniter degradation (20% — gas models). The flat hot-surface igniter, silicon carbide or silicon nitride depending on year, is the most common gas-oven failure. It must glow hot enough to draw the current that opens the gas safety valve; as it weakens it still glows but cannot pull enough current, so the valve never opens and the burner will not light. The igniter is replaced. Temperature sensor failure (25%). The oven sensor reports cavity temperature; drifted or open, it misleads the board so heat is wrong or absent. It is tested against its resistance spec and replaced. Heating element failure — electric (22%). An electric bake element can break or develop a high-resistance section, showing a dull spot or no glow. A visibly broken element is replaced. Control board failure (15%). The board runs the AccuBake regulation. A board fault produces erratic or no operation and is replaced after the sensor and element are cleared. Door lock / self-clean stuck (10%). The self-clean lock must disengage once the oven cools; a failed lock motor or a hung cycle can leave the oven locked and unable to heat. A power cycle often clears a hung lock. Thermal fuse / high-limit (5%). A blown thermal fuse or tripped high-limit cuts power after an overheat, killing the heat. Both are checked and reset or replaced. Wiring / connection failure (3%). High-current element wiring at 240V can heat-damage its terminals over years, creating intermittent heat. Burned connections are repaired.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnose it, step by step#
- Cut power at the breaker before touching the element or wiring — 240V is lethal.
- On a gas oven, if you smell gas strongly, leave and call for help.
- Watch a gas igniter: if it glows but the burner never lights, it is too weak to open the valve.
- On an electric oven, inspect the bake element for a break or dull spot.
- If it locked after self-clean, power-cycle the oven to clear a hung lock.
Preventing a repeat#
- Use a surge protector rated for the oven's amperage to protect the control board.
- Run self-clean no more than a few times a year, since its heat stresses the lock and elements.
- Replace a slow-to-light gas igniter early, before it fails to light at all.
- Have burned element terminals repaired promptly to avoid intermittent heat.
