The answer first
On a Whirlpool oven, F8E5 means the control cannot trust what it is reading from the exhaust air temperature sensor.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F8E5 | The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the Exhaust Air Temperature Sensor, or the associated wiring. |
What you observe
- The code appears and the cycle stops where it was — The display holds the code, the heat goes off, and the cycle does not resume on its own.
- It comes back after power is cut and restored — Cutting power clears the stored code. If the circuit still reads out of range, the control posts it again at the next attempt, and how quickly it does so is a clue in itself.
- NEAR MISS — the oven heats but the food is wrong — An oven that runs too hot or too cool without posting a code is a calibration matter, not this fault.
Ranked causes
- The exhaust air temperature sensor has drifted out of range or gone open — Ranked first because it is the part the code names and the part that ages in place.
- A connector at either end of the circuit has backed out or corroded — An open contact in a plug reads to the control exactly as a dead sensor does, and it is the cheapest of the three to rule out.
- The control that reads the circuit has failed — Last, deliberately: it is the expensive answer and the least likely one, and it is only credible once the three above have been cleared at the board connector.
What to check first, and why
- Cut power, restore it, and time how long the code takes to return — It costs nothing and it halves the problem. An instant return means something is open or shorted all the time, a delayed one means heat or movement is part of it.
- Follow the visible part of the harness run with your eyes — Chafe, a pinched loop and browned insulation are faults you can see, and finding one here ends the diagnosis before a meter comes out.
- Measure the sensor and its circuit at the control connector — This is the step that separates the part from its wiring, and it is where an owner's checks end.
The steps you can do yourself
- Power the oven down at the breaker, wait, then restore it — A full power-down clears the stored code and lets the control re-read the circuit from scratch.
About 5 min
- Let the oven cool completely, then run a short bake and watch — From stone cold, set a low bake and stay with it. Whether the code appears cold, appears when hot, or does not appear at all is the most valuable thing you can record.
About 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the oven or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a built-in oven is normally hard-wired, so the breaker is its only disconnect. If your range burns gas and you smell gas: leave the building without switching anything on or off, call the gas utility or emergency services from outside, and do not look for the leak yourself.
Where the owner checks end
Call once the reset and the connector check are clean, or straight away if the code returns on every cycle, or the appliance also runs its cooling fan constantly.

What this page does and does not cover
This page reads F8E5 as Whirlpool documents it for ovens in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a wall oven, a range and a microwave-oven combination can all post it with different hardware behind the panel. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
