Most Likely Cause#
A Whirlpool burner that refuses to light almost always comes down to one of three parts: the igniter, the spark module, or the gas valve — and the igniter is by far the most replaced of them. What the Click Tells You#
Turn each cooktop burner to the light position and listen across all of them. If no burner clicks, the shared spark module — behind the rear panel or under the cooktop, and common to every burner — has likely failed. If only one burner stays silent while the others click, that burner's own spark electrode or its wiring is the problem, not the module. And if a burner clicks steadily but never catches, the spark is fine and the trouble is at the burner itself: a wet or dirty burner shorting the spark, or gas not reaching the flame.
The Igniter and Ports#
Igniter. Cooktop burners fire from a ceramic spark electrode, while the oven uses a hot-surface igniter that glows to roughly 1,800-2,500°F and must draw enough current to open the gas valve. A cracked or weak igniter can't make the spark or the heat it needs. A cooktop electrode should throw a visible spark when you turn the knob; an oven igniter should glow bright orange within 30-60 seconds and read about 40-400 ohms, with anything over 400 ohms marking a weak igniter due for replacement.
Burner ports. If the electrode sparks but the gas doesn't catch, the small ports around the burner head are likely clogged with spills and grease. Pull the cap and head and clear each port with a straight pin or needle — never a toothpick, which snaps off and blocks the port — and make sure the cap sits dead flat, since a tilted cap scatters the gas away from the spark.

The Spark Module, Valve, and Wiring#
Spark module. The module generates the high-voltage pulses that fire every electrode, so a dead module silences all the burners at once. That all-quiet pattern is its signature; one silent burner is not.
Gas valve. On the oven, the valve only opens once the igniter draws enough current — typically 3.2-3.6 amps — so a weak igniter that glows but never reaches full heat won't trip the valve's safety and no gas flows. On the cooktop the valve is linked mechanically to the knob, and a worn valve stem or knob can keep it from opening fully.
Wiring. Loose spade connectors or corroded terminals between the igniter, module, and control board choke the spark, and rodents behind the range chew insulation on stoves against an exterior wall. Inspect visible wiring for burn marks, corrosion, or a connector backed off its tab before condemning a part.
Step-by-Step#
- Turn each cooktop burner to light and listen: all silent points at the shared module, one silent points at that burner's own electrode.
- Pull the burner cap and head, clear each port with a straight pin, and dry everything completely — moisture is the top "clicks but won't light" cause.
- Inspect the electrode for cracks, carbon, or a gap opened too wide, and clean a corroded tip with fine sandpaper.
- For the oven, meter the igniter cold: a healthy reading sits in the low hundreds of ohms, and a much higher reading marks a weak igniter.
- Confirm the gas is on — the shutoff handle parallel to the pipe means open — and check that other gas appliances in the home still work.
Work top to bottom and stop at the first thing clearly wrong; most no-light burners are solved by step two, a simple dry-and-clean, before any part is needed at all.
