Washer Drum Bearing Replacement
If the bearing job costs more than 50% of a new washer and your machine is over 8 years old, replace the appliance. Under that, repair is usually the smarter money. The honest caveat: bearing replacement is labour-intensive at 3-5 hours, so it earns its keep mainly on premium front-load washers under 7 years old — and…
Decide by age and repair size#
| Washer age | Low cost | Mid cost | High cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3 years | Repair | Repair | Repair |
| 3-5 years | Repair | Repair | Evaluate |
| 5-8 years | Repair | Evaluate | Replace |
| 8-12 years | Evaluate | Replace | Replace |
| Over 12 years | Replace | Replace | Replace |
"Evaluate" means weigh the quote against the machine's overall condition — if other components are also worn, replacement is the smarter call.
The question that decides it: is the spider also gone?#
Before you authorise anything, ask whether the drum spider is corroded. It commonly is on Samsung and LG front-loaders, and once the spider goes the total repair cost climbs significantly — at which point a 3-5 hour bearing job on top of a spider replacement rarely makes sense.

Why the labour is so high#
On a front-load washer, the entire drum assembly has to come out, the outer tub is split in half, the old bearing is pressed out and the new one pressed in. That needs specialist bearing press tools and 3-5 hours of work. The part is not what you are paying for; the teardown is.
What people forget to count#
- Installation hassle. A new washer means delivery scheduling, possible plumbing or electrical changes, disposal of the old machine, and 2-4 hours of your own time. The bearing repair takes 1-3 hours with no disruption to your laundry setup.
- Cascading failure risk. If the bearing failed because of a root cause — a power surge, water intrusion, restricted airflow — replacing the part without fixing the cause invites a repeat. A technician should identify and correct the underlying issue.
- Parts availability window. Manufacturers typically stock parts for 10-15 years after a model is discontinued. If yours is near that edge, bearings may become scarce or expensive from aftermarket suppliers.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Get a diagnosis before you commit#
A qualified technician can tell you whether the bearings are genuinely the problem, since misdiagnosis is common with DIY troubleshooting; what condition the motor, transmission and other major parts are in, because a single-part repair on a machine with several tired components is money badly spent; whether your issue is covered by a manufacturer warranty, as several brands offer extended coverage on this exact part; and the model-specific cost, which can differ significantly from a general estimate.
Do not wait too long#
A failing bearing gets worse, and eventually lets the drum contact the outer tub — which brings water leaks and, at high spin speeds, the risk of drum separation. A few weeks of "I will deal with it later" is the outer limit.
