Viking Cooktop Continuous Clicking: Causes & Fix

What clicks on a Viking cooktop#

On sealed-burner models such as the VGSU5366B and rangetops like the VGRT5486G, one spark module under the cooktop feeds every electrode. It fires only until it senses the flame through the burner's ground path, then stops. Lose that path and the module never gets the all-clear, so it clicks continuously — hard on the module but not a gas hazard.

Why a Viking cooktop clicks#

• Moisture under the burner. Spills and cleaning water settle beneath the heavy sealed caps and short the electrode until they dry. The most common cause.
• A poor ground. Viking's spark sensing relies on a solid ground; a loose chassis ground or a cooktop not seated to a grounded frame leaves it clicking even when clean and dry. This is more common on cooktops than on freestanding ranges.
• A stuck knob switch. A spark switch held closed by grease keeps one burner firing regardless of the knob.
• A failed spark module. Shorted internally, the shared module fires the whole cooktop at once.

Dry it and check the ground#

Lift the sealed caps and burner heads on a cool cooktop and blot every trace of moisture, then let the area dry fully — a fan speeds it, and trapped water can take an hour or two to leave. Reseat the caps square. If a unit like the VGC5366B still clicks bone-dry, the fix is usually a grounding check or a spark-module swap, both technician tasks on a built-in cooktop.

Before the holiday cooking season#

A cooktop ticking through every meal is at its most maddening in a busy kitchen. If a spill left yours clicking, dry the burners now so the surface is quiet before the holiday cooking starts. If it keeps clicking dry, book a visit and a technician will check the ground and change the spark module.
