Speed Queen Dryer E4: Door Switch Fault — Simple Fix for a Common Code
E4 on a Speed Queen dryer means the door switch circuit is not confirming that the door is closed. The dryer will not tumble or heat until the switch registers a closed-door state. Unlike washer door lock codes that involve motorized mechanisms, dryer door switches are simple mechanical microswitches — making E4 one of the easiest Speed Queen repairs.
Speed Queen's Commercial Door Switch
Speed Queen uses a heavier-duty door switch than consumer brands — rated for 1+ million cycles (commercial laundromat standard). Despite this durability, the switch eventually wears out, or more commonly, the door strike (the part of the door that physically presses the switch) becomes misaligned.

Common E4 Causes
Door strike misalignment: The plastic or metal strike on the door that presses the switch can shift position from door hinge wear or impact. The switch does not fully depress, and the circuit remains open.
Switch contact wear: After hundreds of thousands of cycles, the switch's internal contacts develop pitting that prevents clean contact. The switch may work intermittently before failing completely.
Broken switch actuator: The button or lever that transfers the door strike's force to the internal contacts can crack or break off.
Wiring fault: The switch wires route through the door frame area. Vibration can chafe wire insulation against metal edges, creating an intermittent or permanent open circuit.
Diagnosis
- Close the door and listen for the click of the switch engaging
- If no click: the strike is not reaching the switch. Check alignment
- If click but E4: the switch clicks mechanically but does not make electrical contact. Test with multimeter
- Test: unplug dryer, access the switch (behind the front panel near the door opening), disconnect wires, test continuity with door closed (press the switch manually). Should beep when pressed, open when released
