E1 on a Speed Queen dryer signals a communication breakdown between the main control board and the user interface (UI) board. These two boards are connected by a ribbon cable or multi-pin harness and exchange data continuously during operation. E1 means this data exchange has stopped.
Speed Queen's Dual-Board Architecture
Speed Queen dryers use separate main and UI boards — an architecture inherited from their commercial laundromat machines where the UI board (coin-operated interface) is frequently replaced while the main board (controlling motor, heater, sensors) remains constant.
In residential models, the UI board includes the display, cycle selector, and start/stop controls. The main board controls the drum motor, heater relay, thermistors, and moisture sensors.

Root Causes
Ribbon cable connection: The most common E1 cause. The cable connecting the two boards works loose from vibration over thousands of cycles. Disconnect and firmly reseat both ends.
Ribbon cable damage: Physical damage (pinched during service, rodent chew, moisture corrosion) creates signal interruption. Inspect the cable for visible damage.
UI board failure: The UI board's microcontroller or communication IC has failed. Visual signs: burned components, cracked solder joints on the connector.
Main board communication port: Less common — the main board's serial port circuit failure.

- Locate the ribbon cable/harness between main board and UI board
