Samsung Microwave Motor Replacement

The turntable motor is a small, low-torque synchronous motor under the cavity floor. It spins the tray so microwave energy reaches all of the food; without it, you get hot and cold spots even though the oven still heats.

Symptoms of a Failed Motor#

• The turntable does not rotate at all, and food cooks unevenly
• The tray turns intermittently — the motor engages for a few seconds, then stops
• Grinding or clicking from under the turntable — stripped motor gears or a damaged drive coupling
• The tray turns very slowly — a weak but still-running motor
• A burning smell from below the tray — the motor windings are overheating

Check the Coupling First#

Before ordering a motor, look at the turntable coupling — the D-shaped plastic hub the tray sits on, driven by the motor's D-shaped shaft. That hub can strip out while the motor underneath is perfectly fine, and it is a much cheaper part. Also confirm the tray is not simply jammed: these motors are low-torque and cannot turn a tray that is catching on the cavity wall, so make sure the roller support ring rolls freely and nothing is wedged. Only after ruling those out is the motor the likely culprit.

The Safety Step#

Unplug the microwave first. On a countertop model you can usually reach the motor from the bottom without ever opening the high-voltage section, which keeps the job safe and simple. On an over-the-range unit, though, reaching it may mean removing the cabinet shell — and that puts you next to the high-voltage capacitor, which holds a lethal charge even unplugged. Discharge the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver before touching anything inside, or hand the over-the-range job to a professional.

Replacing the Motor#

1. Unplug the microwave and remove the glass tray and the roller support ring.
2. On a countertop model, turn the unit on its side or remove the bottom panel to reach the motor.
3. On an over-the-range model, access from the bottom if you can; if the shell must come off, discharge the capacitor first.
4. The motor's D-shaped shaft passes up through the cavity floor. Unplug the two-pin wire connector.
5. Remove the two or three Phillips screws holding the motor to the cavity bottom.
6. Fit the new DE31-10181A, making sure the D-shaft seats up through the floor hole, then reconnect and secure it.
7. Reassemble and test — the tray should turn smoothly.

Tools: a #2 Phillips, a multimeter (a healthy synchronous motor reads on the order of 1,000 to 3,000 ohms), and an insulated screwdriver only if the shell comes off.

Is It Worth Fixing, and How Long It Lasts#

A stalled turntable is more than a nuisance — uneven heating can leave cold spots where bacteria survive, so it is worth fixing rather than just rotating dishes by hand. On a newer microwave, the modest motor and a few screws make it an easy call; on an older one with other issues, weigh it against replacement. A Samsung turntable motor typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and its life is shortened mostly by strain — consistently heavy containers, a debris-fouled roller ring, or a tray that jams against the cavity and stalls the motor.

Getting the Part Right#

The OEM number is DE31-10181A. Samsung's microwave model numbers start with ME, MS, or MC — find yours inside the door frame or on the rear panel — and since Samsung revises parts across production runs, match the full model number rather than trusting the prefix.
