Samsung Gas Stove Burner Won't Turn Off: Causes

Shut off the gas#

Set the wall shutoff valve handle perpendicular to the pipe, or close the main meter if you can't reach it. Don't force the knob — a broken valve stem means a gas leak — ventilate with an open window, and leave the range off until the valve is replaced.

Samsung's gas hardware#

Samsung gas ranges use electronic ignition — spark igniters on the cooktop and a hot-surface igniter for the oven — and these models commonly see igniter failures and gas valve solenoid issues. The NX58 and NX60 series are the most widely installed. A burner that won't shut off, though, is the mechanical surface valve, not the igniter.

Why it happens#

• A stuck gas valve (most common). Grease and debris get into the valve stem and hold it open, and heat cycling wears the valve seat. The valve internals don't clean up reliably, so the valve is replaced.
• A stripped knob or shaft. The knob turns the valve through a D-shaped or splined shaft; strip the knob or round the shaft and the knob spins while the valve stays open. Fit a new knob first, then the valve assembly if the shaft is damaged.
• A broken valve spring. The closing spring can break and let gas pressure push the valve open again. It isn't sold on its own, so the valve assembly is replaced.

Checking it#

With the gas off, turn the knob — free spinning points to a stripped knob or shaft. Remove the knob and check the D-shaped or splined hole and the shaft for stripped teeth or a rounded flat. If the shaft is good, try a new knob; if the shaft turns the valve but gas still flows, the valve has failed and a licensed technician replaces it.

Maintenance before the holidays#

A little routine care prevents most of this: clean the burner ports monthly with a pin, soapy-water-test the gas connections each year, and inspect the igniters for cracks or carbon buildup. Doing it before the holiday cooking rush keeps a stuck burner from spoiling the season.
