How a Samsung dishwasher dries#
Samsung dries mostly by condensation: the final rinse leaves dishes hot, and moisture then condenses onto the cooler stainless tub wall and drains away. Rinse aid is central to this — it breaks water's surface tension so it sheets off instead of beading and clinging. Premium models add an AutoRelease Door that pops open about 2 inches after drying to vent the remaining steam, and heated-dry models add an element to speed it. When drying fails, the fault is almost always in one of those helpers, not the wash itself.
Read the codes first#
On Wi-Fi models (DW80R series and newer), open SmartThings, select the dishwasher, and run Self Diagnosis under Device Care; it pulls the stored history from the board and shows which cycle phase is failing. A heating fault often surfaces as HE1, and codes such as 1E, 3E, 5E, or 7E flag filter, motor, and drain issues that can worsen drying by leaving dirty water behind.

Working through the causes#
Rinse-aid dispenser empty (most common). Because Samsung dries by condensation, an empty rinse-aid reservoir is the single biggest reason dishes come out wet, with water beading and clinging instead of sheeting off. Fill the dispenser, and if drying is still marginal, turn the dosage up a notch. Plastics, which hold less heat, benefit most from good rinse-aid action.
Heating element weak (common, heated-dry models). On models with a drying element, a failed element leaves the final rinse and dry cold, so nothing evaporates — often with an HE1 heating code. Disconnect power and test the element for continuity; an open reading confirms it. On pure condensation models there is no element to blame, so this applies to heated-dry configurations.
AutoRelease door stuck (occasional). If your model has AutoRelease and the door no longer pops open after the cycle, the vented steam stays trapped and re-condenses on the dishes. Watch the end of a cycle to confirm the door releases about 2 inches; a mechanism that fails to open leaves everything damp even when heating is fine.
Poor loading (common). Cups, mugs, and bowls loaded flat collect a puddle that never drains or evaporates, and tightly nested items shield each other from heat and airflow. Angle items so water runs off, keep tall pieces from blocking the vent, and leave space between them.
High-limit thermostat tripped (occasional). On heated-dry models the high-limit thermostat cuts the element on an overheat, and once tripped it leaves the dry cycle cold. Test it for continuity and reset or replace it, and check why it overheated so the replacement does not trip again.

Why plastics stay wettest#
Condensation drying leans on the dishes themselves holding heat: they come out of the final rinse hot, and moisture then condenses onto the cooler stainless tub wall and drains away. Heavy ceramics and glass store a lot of heat and dry well this way, but thin plastics hold almost none, so they cool fast and the water on them never gets the chance to evaporate or run off. That is why a Samsung can dry a full load of plates yet leave the plastic containers beaded with water — it is the physics of the drying method, not a fault. Good rinse-aid action helps most here, and placing plastics on the top rack, angled so water sheets off, gives them their best chance. If even the ceramics and glass come out wet, though, the problem is not plastics-and-physics but a real fault in the rinse aid, the element, or the vent.
Maintenance that helps drying#
- Keep the rinse-aid dispenser filled and dialed up if glass and plastics stay spotty.
- Clean both filter sections — the coarse cylinder and fine mesh cup — weekly so clean water rinses and dries.
- Run Samsung's Self Clean monthly (hold Sanitize and Dry for three seconds on DW80R models).
- Enable AutoRelease Door if your model supports it, so steam vents instead of re-wetting the load.
