Samsung Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes: Causes

Most Likely Cause#

When a Samsung dishwasher stops cleaning dishes well, the two most common causes are clogged spray-arm nozzles and water that is not hot enough to clean. After those come a worn wash-motor impeller reducing pressure, a soap dispenser opening at the wrong time, and on equipped models a failed WaterWall motor.

Samsung DW80 dishwashers push water through upper and lower spray arms whose small nozzles clog with hard-water minerals and food particles, and they rely on hot incoming water for detergent to work. Both are things you can check and fix yourself, so it is worth starting there before assuming a component failed.

Cleaning depends on strong, hot, well-aimed water. The Digital Inverter wash motor drives water up through the upper and lower spray arms, and the upper arm on Samsung models feeds through a narrow tube at the rear of the tub, so its nozzles are especially prone to clogging with mineral scale. Detergent needs heat to work: Samsung dishwashers want incoming water of at least 120°F, and the internal heater boosts it during the wash, but if the water arriving is below about 100°F — common with long plumbing runs or a low water-heater setting — the heater cannot fully compensate. Over years, the wash motor's rubber impeller vanes wear and pressure drops, and on WaterWall models a motorized deflector sweeps the spray; when it fails (error 7E on models like the DW80H9970US), the lower pattern weakens. Each drops cleaning power in its own way.

Check It Yourself First#

Before servicing, unplug the appliance or turn off the circuit breaker.

1. Clear the spray arms. The lower arm lifts off its post and the upper arm unscrews counterclockwise. Rinse both and clear each nozzle with a toothpick — never a metal pin, which enlarges the holes. Hold each arm to the light to confirm every hole is open.
2. Check water temperature. Run the kitchen faucet hot for two minutes before starting the dishwasher so it fills with genuinely hot water; Samsung models want at least 120°F for good results.
3. Judge wash pressure. Weak spray with clean arms and hot water points to a worn wash-motor impeller, which is part of the sealed motor assembly rather than a separate part.
4. Watch the dispenser. If detergent is left in the cup or released during the rinse instead of the wash, the bi-metal dispenser latch is opening late or not at all.
5. Look at the lower center (WaterWall). On WaterWall models, dishes clean except in the center of the lower rack, with a 7E error, point to a failed WaterWall motor.

Repair or Replace?#

Clearing the arms and running hotter water is free and fixes most cases. A dispenser latch is inexpensive; a wash-motor or WaterWall motor is a moderate part. On a Samsung dishwasher, poor cleaning is usually maintenance or a single component, not a failing machine, so repair is the right call — get a quote before a motor job.
