Clean First, Replace Rarely#

Most Samsung dishwasher complaints trace to a dirty filter rather than a mechanical fault, so cleaning is almost always the first move.

Cleaning the Filter#

1. Pull out the lower rack.
2. Turn the cylindrical filter at the center of the tub floor counter-clockwise and lift it out.
3. Lift the flat fine-mesh filter out of its recess underneath.
4. Rinse both under warm running water and scrub gently with a soft brush such as an old toothbrush — never steel wool, which tears the mesh.
5. For stubborn grease or odor, soak the parts in warm water with vinegar for twenty to thirty minutes.
6. Seat the flat mesh back in its recess, then drop the cylinder in and turn it clockwise to lock.
7. Run a short rinse cycle to confirm it drains.

The two stages catch debris differently — large particles in the cylinder, fine sediment in the flat mesh — so both have to be cleaned, not just the visible one.

When to Replace the Assembly#

Cleaning restores almost every filter, so replacement is reserved for physical damage: a tear or hole in the fine mesh that lets particles through to the spray-arm nozzles, or a cracked cage from a dropped fork or knife. What the Error Codes Tell You#

Samsung dishwashers surface a set of codes on the display that help narrow the problem before you open anything. A severe filter blockage often shows as a 5E drain error, because water cannot clear the sump fast enough and the drain pump is overworked; a 4E code instead points at a water-supply problem on the fill side rather than the filter. Seeing 5E after months without a filter cleaning is a strong hint to start at the filter.

Why a Dirty Filter Cascades#

A clogged filter starves the spray arms of clean water, so wash quality drops and debris recirculates onto the dishes. Left long enough, the restriction backs water into the sump, throws 5E drain errors, and overstresses the drain pump — and a filter that has torn from harsh scrubbing lets particles reach and clog the spray-arm nozzles. A Simple Routine#
