Not every Samsung uses a fan; budget models dry by condensation alone. Where a fan is fitted, it moves air during the dry phase to carry moisture out of the tub.

Signs the fan has failed#

• Dishes are still wet after the dry cycle.
• No whirring in the last 15–20 minutes, when the fan should be running.
• Condensation drips onto the floor when you open the door.
• A musty odor from trapped moisture.
• The AutoRelease door opens at the end but the dishes are drenched.

Check the display first — codes like 4E, 5E, HE, OE, and LE help point the way.

Replacing the fan#

1. Switch off the breaker.
2. Remove the inner door panel (8–10 Torx T20 or Phillips screws); the fan is visible at the top of the door or tub once the panel is off.
3. Unplug the fan motor's 2-pin harness.
4. Remove the 2 Phillips mounting screws and lift the fan out.
5. Fit the new DD31-00013A, mount it, and reconnect.
6. Rebuild the inner panel, seating the vapor gasket properly.
7. Restore power, run a cycle with Dry enabled, and listen for the fan in the final 15–20 minutes.

Tools: Torx T20, Phillips #2, and a multimeter — a healthy fan motor winding reads about 50–200 ohms, with OL meaning an open motor.

Rule out the cheaper causes first#

Wet dishes aren't always the fan. Rinse aid does more for drying than the fan does — it breaks water's surface tension so it sheets off instead of beading, so top up the dispenser before you suspect the motor. Samsung's plastic-tub models condense poorly (plastic doesn't cool like stainless), so they lean harder on both the fan and rinse aid. And if the fan clearly runs but dishes stay wet, look at the heater or thermostat instead.

Parts and lifespan#

A Samsung dishwasher fan usually lasts 8–12 years. It runs in constant steam and draws lint-laden kitchen air, so bearing wear and an unbalanced blade are the common ends. Clean the vent opening every 3 months so lint doesn't choke airflow, keep rinse aid topped up to ease the load, and run Heated or Extra Dry to help the fan finish the job. Model numbers start with DW, and Samsung revises the DD-prefix parts between runs, so match to yours.

How Samsung dishwashers dry#

Samsung leans on a mix of methods depending on the model: a heating element or the residual heat of the final hot rinse warms the load, the stainless tub condenses moisture on its cool walls, and the assist fan pushes that damp air out so drier air can take its place. On top-tier units the AutoRelease door also pops open at the end to vent steam and speed evaporation. Because the fan is only one link in that chain, a wet load with a fan you can clearly hear running points elsewhere — usually a weak heating element, a thermostat cutting heat early, or simply an empty rinse-aid dispenser. Confirm the fan is actually dead on the meter (an OL reading, or resistance far outside 50–200 ohms) before you commit to the part.
