Samsung Dishwasher Door Latch Replacement

The latch does two jobs: it holds the door against wash-water pressure, and its built-in switch signals the control board. Either half can fail.

Signs the latch has failed#

• The door closes but the cycle won't start — the interlock isn't sending the closed signal.
• The latch clicks shut mechanically but still nothing runs — the electrical switch has failed while the catch works.
• The door pops open mid-cycle — the latch can't hold against the pressure inside the tub.
• The handle feels wobbly or won't spring back — a broken spring or cam.
• The cycle indicator blinks "door open" — the microswitch isn't engaging.

Check the display first: Samsung dishwashers throw codes like 4E, 5E, HE, OE, and LE that narrow things down before you open anything.

Replacing the latch#

1. Switch off the breaker and open the door fully.
2. Remove the inner door panel — 8–10 Torx T20 or Phillips screws around the edge — and separate it carefully to protect the vapor barrier behind it.
3. The latch sits at the top center, tied to the handle. Unplug its wire harness (a 2- or 3-pin connector for the interlock).
4. Remove the 2 Phillips screws holding the latch to the door frame.
5. Fit the new DD81-02132A, drive the screws, and reconnect the harness.
6. Rebuild the inner panel, making sure the latch strike lines up with the tub receiver.
7. Restore power; the door should click firmly and the cycle start right away.

Tools: Torx T20, Phillips #2, and a multimeter to check interlock continuity with the latch engaged.

Before you order a whole assembly#

The latch contains the safety interlock switch, so test that switch with a multimeter first — if the catch is fine and only the switch is dead, you've confirmed the fault. Two alignment issues also masquerade as a bad latch: a misaligned strike on the tub frame (loosen its screws and realign before replacing anything) and weak side door springs that don't push the door firmly enough to engage. Model numbers start with DW on the rating plate, and Samsung revises the DD-prefix parts across production runs, so match to your exact model.

Parts and lifespan#

A Samsung dishwasher latch typically lasts 8–12 years. Slamming the door, overloading the top rack until the door sags, and years of steam corroding the switch contacts all shorten it — so close firmly without slamming, wipe detergent residue off the latch and strike once a year, and keep an eye on door alignment. Don't put the repair off, either: the interlock blocks every function with the door open, and a latch that lets go mid-cycle spills hot water and suds onto the floor.

Mechanical failure vs. electrical failure#

It helps to separate the latch's two failure modes, because they look different. A broken catch or spring is mechanical — the door won't stay shut, or the handle flops — and you can usually see or feel it. A dead interlock switch is electrical — the door latches perfectly but the machine plays dead — and only a continuity test reveals it. That distinction tells you whether you're chasing a hook and spring or a switch, and it's why testing the interlock before ordering saves buying the wrong thing.
