What an owner can act on#
The ice maker is where this corpus concentrates, so start there. Pull the bin right out and look at it in the light: splits in the plastic, a splintered lip, or fragments loose among the cubes are worth dealing with before the next harvest rather than after, since anything that breaks up in the bin leaves pieces in the ice you serve. Check that the bin seats squarely on its rails, because a bin sitting proud can foul the ejector arm and put load somewhere it was not designed to go.
Follow the water supply while you are behind the unit. The saddle or shut-off valve and the compression fittings should be dry and free of green or white crusting, and the floor at the wall should show no damp patch or lifted flooring — a slow leak announces itself underfoot long before it shows in the freezer. Where the line runs behind the cabinet, make sure it is not kinked or pinched against the wall by a refrigerator pushed too far back.
The electrical checks are quick and worth doing on the same trip. Unplug before touching anything at the back, then look for scorching or melted insulation around the compressor terminal cover, and vacuum the condenser coils, since a dust-packed coil makes the compressor labour against itself. At the wall, inspect the cord for a flattened or cracked jacket and heat marks at the plug face. A refrigerator wants its own circuit and a direct wall outlet — an extension lead or power strip is not rated for compressor starting current.
One recall notice is listed above, from 2022, concerning a fall hazard on bottom-freezer and French-door models. A recall list is a set of documents, not a rate, and it says nothing about what share of any population was affected.
