What an owner can act on#
The ice maker leads this corpus and is the simplest thing to check. Pull the bin fully out and look at it in good light for splits, a splintered rim, or fragments loose among the cubes, and make sure it seats squarely on its rails so the ejector arm is not fouled. Then follow the water supply behind the unit to its shut-off valve, checking the compression fittings for green or white crusting and the floor at the wall for damp or lifted flooring. A slow leak at a fitting shows itself underfoot long before it shows in the freezer.
The compressor sits at the back and the check begins with unplugging the appliance. With power off, look at the terminal cover on the compressor housing for scorching, melted insulation or a cover that no longer sits flush, and at the relay beside it for browning. Vacuum the condenser coils and the fan while you have access — a coil packed with dust makes the compressor labour against itself. In use, a steady hum is expected; a hard click repeating every few minutes, or a compressor running continuously while the cabinet fails to hold temperature, is not, and that combination is worth acting on rather than watching.
The control board and the supply share a symptom set. A display lighting segments nobody chose, a panel the unit ignores, a warm-plastic smell near the controls, or a cord with a flattened jacket and heat marks at the plug face all mean stopping. A refrigerator wants its own circuit and a direct wall outlet; an extension lead or power strip is not rated for the starting current a compressor draws.
