What an owner can act on#
The compressor is at the top of this corpus and it lives at the back, which makes it the one check that starts with unplugging the appliance. With the power off, look at the terminal cover on the compressor housing for scorching, melted insulation or a cover that no longer sits flush, and at the relay beside it for browning. Vacuum the condenser coils and fan blades while you have access — a coil blanketed in dust makes the compressor work against itself. A steady hum is normal; a hard click repeating every few minutes, or a compressor running continuously while the cabinet fails to hold temperature, is not.
The ice maker sits second and is the easiest to inspect. Pull the bin out and look for splits, a splintered rim, or fragments loose among the cubes, and check that it seats squarely so the ejector arm is not fouled. Follow the water line to its shut-off valve and check the fittings for green or white crusting and the floor at the wall for damp.
The control board and the wiring share a symptom set. A display lighting segments nobody chose, a panel the unit ignores, a warm-plastic smell near the controls, or a cord with heat marks at the plug face all mean stopping rather than continuing. A refrigerator belongs on its own circuit in a wall outlet; an extension lead or power strip is not rated for the starting current a compressor draws. If the cabinet is not holding temperature while the compressor runs, move the food, unplug it, and have it looked at rather than leaving it going.
