The short answer
When a Maytag dishwasher displays H2O, the control is naming the water circuit. What the manufacturer documents is in the table; what to check first is in the ranking under it. Stop and close the supply tap if there is water in the base.
The documented code and its meaning

| H2O | Potential Cause: Not Detecting Water |
What you actually observe
- Water is standing in the base with the machine idle — A valve that no longer seats keeps letting water through.
- Dishes come out dry and dirty — No water reached them at all.
- The cycle starts and no water can be heard entering — The most direct symptom of the fill side.
- NEAR MISS — water enters and is never pumped away — That is the drain side and it belongs on the drain code page.
Causes, most likely first on this dishwasher
- A supply tap that is closed or only part open — It is the first thing to check and it is right more often than anyone expects, especially after work under the sink.
- A blocked inlet screen at the fill valve — Scale and grit collect at the screen and starve the fill without blocking it outright.
- A fill valve that no longer seats or no longer opens — Both failures produce a fill fault; which one it is decides whether the machine floods or stays dry.
- The sensor or switch that tells the control how much water is in the tub — A good fill that is not measured reads exactly like a fill that never happened.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the supply tap under the sink first — Free, quick, and the single most common finding in this family.
- Listen for water entering at the start of the cycle — Silence and a normal fill sound separate the supply side from the measuring side.
- Look for water standing in the base when the machine is idle — Water where it should not be points at a valve that is not seating.
- Leave the valve and the sensor to a technician — Both sit behind the toe kick with mains wiring beside them.
What an owner can safely check
- Open the supply tap under the sink fully and retry — A quarter-turn valve left part closed is the classic cause after any plumbing work.
About 5 min
- Take the power off and check the inlet hose for kinks behind the machine — A hose crushed when the unit was pushed back restricts the fill without leaking.

- Look under the toe kick for water before running anything else — If the base is wet, stop and call rather than running another cycle.

Safety
Take the power away first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, since a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and mains wiring share a very small space in a dishwasher, and the sump can hold standing water even when the cycle has stopped. Assume there is water in the base until you have looked. Do not re-route or hold closed anything on the door circuit; it takes power away at a point the design depends on.
When this stops being an owner job
Get it looked at if water is standing in the base, or the fill fault repeats with the tap fully open. At that point the next step is a meter or a panel off, and the base is out of reach until the unit is drawn forward from under the counter. Do not wait at all if there is a burning smell, visible scorching, or a breaker that trips the moment the appliance starts. Those three override everything above.

What this page does not cover
The H2O reading set out here is the shared-platform one for Maytag dishwasher models, not a single-model one. Earlier generations that reuse these characters for a different condition are outside it. So are wiring colours, connector positions, torque figures and part numbers, all of which vary by family and belong on a family page rather than here. If a page exists for your family or model, go there first — it is the more specific answer — and the code index below lists them.
