LG Washer CE: The Motor Is Drawing Too Much Current
CE means the motor current exceeds the board's programmed limit. The Inverter Direct Drive motor's current draw is monitored continuously by the inverter board. When current spikes beyond the threshold for longer than the debounce time, CE triggers and the washer stops to protect the motor and board from thermal damage.
What Causes Overcurrent
Overloaded Drum (35%)
The simplest and most common cause: too many clothes. LG's Direct Drive motor is powerful but has defined current limits. An overloaded drum requires more torque to rotate, which draws more current. Large comforters, heavy towels, and dense wet items (jeans, work clothes) are the worst offenders.
Fix: Remove some items. Redistribute the remaining load evenly. Restart the cycle. If CE does not return, the cause was overloading.
LG front-loaders should be loaded to approximately 75% of visible drum volume — you should be able to fit your hand between the top of the load and the door opening. Stuffing items until the door barely closes guarantees CE or UE during spin.
Worn Drum Bearings (25%)
The bearings that support the inner drum's shaft wear over 7-12 years. As they degrade, friction increases. The motor draws progressively more current to maintain drum speed against the increasing resistance. Eventually, current exceeds the CE threshold.
Symptoms before CE appears: loud rumbling or grinding during spin, the drum wobbles visibly when you push it by hand (shaft play), water or rust-colored streaks appearing on clothes from the deteriorating bearing seal.
Test: Open the door. Grab the top of the drum and try to rock it up and down. More than 1/4 inch of play = worn bearings. Spin the drum by hand — smooth rotation with faint resistance is normal; grinding, clicking, or stiff spots indicate bearing failure.
Motor Winding Short (20%)
One or more of the Direct Drive motor's three-phase stator windings has partially shorted. A short reduces the winding's resistance, causing that phase to draw more current than the others. The imbalance produces excessive total current.
Test: Unplug the washer. Access the motor at the rear tub. Disconnect the 3-wire motor connector. Measure resistance between each pair:
- U-V, V-W, U-W: all three should be within 0.5 ohms of each other, typically 4-7 ohms
- Any pair reading significantly lower than the others = partial short in that winding
- Any pair to motor frame/ground: should be infinite. Any reading = ground fault
Inverter Board Failure (15%)
The inverter board controls the motor by converting DC to variable-frequency AC. If a power transistor (IGBT/MOSFET) in the inverter is failing, it may drive the motor inefficiently, causing current spikes that the board's own monitoring circuit then flags as CE.
Diagnosis clue: CE occurs at specific speeds (low-speed agitation or high-speed spin) but not others. A motor problem causes CE across all speeds. An inverter problem often appears at only one speed range.
Foreign Object Between Drum and Tub (5%)
An item (coin, underwire, small clothing item) trapped between the inner drum and the outer tub creates mechanical interference. The motor draws extra current to overcome this resistance.

CE vs. LE: Both Involve the Motor
CE means too much current (motor trying too hard). LE means the motor cannot move at all (motor locked or stalled). CE usually implies the motor is running but overloaded or degrading. LE implies the motor is completely stuck. Both can result from bearings, but CE appears earlier in bearing decline (increased friction) while LE appears at end-stage (fully seized).

The Direct Drive Advantage and Disadvantage
LG's Inverter Direct Drive eliminates the belt, pulley, and coupling found in traditional washers. This removes several failure points. However, it also means the motor is directly coupled to the drum — any mechanical resistance in the drum system (bearings, foreign objects, overloading) translates directly to motor current. There is no belt to slip as a mechanical fuse. This is why LG monitors current so carefully and triggers CE at relatively low thresholds.
