LG Dryer Switch Replacement — Which Switch Needs Replacing
LG dryers have multiple switches serving different functions. The most commonly replaced is the door switch — a safety interlock that stops the drum when you open the door. But start switches, cycle selectors, and the motor centrifugal switch can also fail, and each presents differently.
Switch Types in LG Dryers
Door switch: Mounted behind the front panel near the door opening. A plunger-type switch that closes when the door pushes against it. When this fails, the dryer will not start even with the door closed. Some models have two door switches in series for redundant safety.
Start switch: The push-to-start button on the control panel. On older models, this is a mechanical switch. On newer touch-control models, it is a membrane switch on the control board (not separately replaceable — requires board replacement). Mechanical start switches can wear out the contact points after years of use.
Motor centrifugal switch: Built into the motor, this switch closes after the motor reaches a certain RPM, switching the motor from start winding to run winding. If this switch fails, the motor hums but does not spin, or it runs briefly then stops. This switch is not separately replaceable — the motor assembly must be replaced.

Start Switch Repair
For mechanical push-to-start switches, the switch contacts can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner as a temporary fix. If the contacts are pitted or burned, replace the switch. The start switch is accessed from behind the control panel by removing the console.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dryer does nothing when I press start. Is it the door switch or start switch?
If the control panel lights up but the dryer does not start, test the door switch first — it is the most common failure. If the panel is completely dead, the problem is power supply, thermal fuse, or control board, not a switch.
Can I bypass the LG dryer door switch for testing?
You can jumper the door switch wires for a brief test, but never leave it bypassed. The door switch prevents the drum from spinning with the door open — bypassing it creates a serious injury hazard.
Does the LG dryer motor centrifugal switch fail often?
Rarely. When it does, the motor must be replaced as a unit because the centrifugal switch is internal. The 10-year motor warranty covers this.
