LG Dryer Switch Replacement: Door & Start

"Switch" covers several different parts on an LG dryer, and each fails in its own way. Working out which one is bad before you order anything saves a wasted part.

The switches inside an LG dryer#

• Door switch — a plunger switch behind the front panel by the door opening. Closing the door presses the plunger; when the switch fails, the dryer won't start even with the door shut. Some models wire two door switches in series for redundancy. This is the part most people are actually after — LG 6601ER1004C.
• Start switch — the push-to-start button. Older consoles use a mechanical switch (LG 6600JB3001E) whose contacts pit after years of use; newer touch panels put "start" on a membrane that's part of the control board and can't be replaced on its own.
• Motor centrifugal switch — built inside the motor, it flips the motor from its start winding to its run winding once the drum is up to speed. If it fails the motor usually hums but won't spin, or runs a moment and quits. It isn't sold separately — the motor goes as an assembly.

Match the symptom to the switch#

Before you replace anything#

A dryer that's completely dead — no panel lights at all — usually isn't a switch. Check the house breaker, the outlet, and the thermal fuse first. Switches come into play once the panel powers up but the drum still won't run. If your model stores fault codes, read them in diagnostic mode; a code can point straight at the interlock instead of leaving you guessing.

Testing the door switch#

Unplug the dryer, lift the top panel, and find the door switch behind the front panel. Unplug its connector and set a multimeter to continuity. Press the plunger — you should read continuity; release it — the reading should break. A switch that won't toggle cleanly is done.

Swapping the door switch#

The door switch is held by 1–2 screws behind the front panel. Unplug the connector, back out the screws, fit the new switch, and reconnect. When you rebuild the front panel, check that the plunger lines up with the door strike so it fully depresses on closing. Figure 20–30 minutes with a Phillips #2 and a multimeter.

Start-switch notes#

On mechanical push-to-start buttons, lightly pitted contacts sometimes clean up with electrical contact cleaner as a stopgap; if they're burned, replace the switch. You reach it by pulling the console at the top of the control panel.

A word on safety#

The door switch exists to stop the drum the instant the door opens. You can briefly jumper its wires to confirm a diagnosis, but never run the dryer with it bypassed — a spinning drum with the door open is a real injury hazard.

How long LG dryer switches last#

Door and start switches are wear parts — thousands of open-close and button-press cycles eventually tire the contacts, and most last well past a decade before acting up. The centrifugal switch, sealed inside the motor, rarely fails on its own. When a switch does quit early, look for a mechanical cause: a sagging door that meets the plunger off-center, or a start button that has to be mashed before it catches. Fixing the underlying alignment keeps the new switch from wearing out just as fast.
