Fix LG Dryer Makes Noise

An LG dryer that makes noise is easiest to diagnose by the type of sound — a squeal, a thump, a scrape, a rattle, or a grind — because each points to a different worn part. LG's DLEX and DLE dryers run a belt-driven drum on support rollers with a blower wheel moving the air, and each of those can announce itself differently as it fails. This guide ranks them by sound.

The likely culprit#

Most likely: a squealing drum belt or idler pulley. As the belt ages it loses grip and slips with a high-pitched squeal, and the idler-pulley bearing that keeps the belt tensioned can squeal as it wears. It's the most common noise complaint. If the sound is a rhythmic thump instead, worn drum rollers are the next suspect.

1. Squealing — belt or idler pulley (30% of cases)#

An aging drum belt loses its grip on the drum and motor pulley and slips with a high-pitched squeal, and the idler-pulley bearing that holds the belt under tension can squeal as it wears too. A squeal that's loudest at startup and eases as things warm points at early bearing wear. Inspect the belt for glazing and cracks and spin the idler pulley by hand for roughness — replace whichever is worn.

2. Thumping — drum rollers (25% of cases)#

LG dryers ride the drum on two to four support rollers, and when a roller bearing develops a flat spot it thumps rhythmically in time with the drum rotation, worse with heavy loads. The thump lands each time the flat spot meets the drum. Spin the rollers (LG 4581EL2002C) by hand with the belt off and feel for flats or drag, and replace them as a set so the drum runs true.

3. Scraping — drum glides or seals (20% of cases)#

The felt seals at the front and rear of the drum wear through over time, letting the metal drum edge scrape against the bulkhead — a loud, distinctive metal-on-metal sound, not a fabric rub. You may see shiny wear marks on the drum edge or bulkhead. Replace the worn glides and felt seals so the drum no longer contacts metal.

4. Rattling — blower wheel or foreign object (15% of cases)#

The blower wheel pulls air through the drum and out the vent, and small items that slip past the lint filter — coins, buttons, a bra underwire — can reach the blower housing and rattle against the spinning wheel, or the wheel itself can crack or loosen on the motor shaft. A rattle that changes with airflow points here. Check the blower housing (LG 5835EL1002A) for debris and inspect the wheel for cracks.

5. Grinding — motor bearing (10% of cases)#

The drive motor has internal bearings that wear over years of use, producing a steady grinding or humming that's present regardless of the drum load and originates at the motor. The motor may run hot or cut out intermittently on its thermal overload. A constant grind unrelated to drum rotation points at the motor bearings, which usually means replacing the motor.
