LG Dryer Control Board Replacement — When the Brain Goes Bad
The control board in an LG dryer manages the drum motor, heating circuit, moisture sensors, exhaust thermistor, and the door switch interlock. LG dryers use a single main board (EBR prefix) that combines both UI functions and machine control — so when the board fails, the dryer typically goes completely dead or behaves erratically across all functions.
Common Board Failure Modes on LG Dryers
LG dryer control boards fail in predictable patterns based on which relay or component gives out:
Heater relay failure: The relay contacts that switch the heating element weld shut from arcing. The dryer runs hot constantly regardless of temperature selection, or the board cuts power to the heater intermittently. The board may show scorching around the relay.
Motor relay failure: The relay that drives the drum motor fails open — the dryer does not tumble but the display and controls work normally. The motor itself is fine (you can verify by applying direct power to the motor terminals).
Power supply section: The onboard voltage regulator or transformer that converts 240V to the board's 5V/12V logic fails. The entire display goes dark and the dryer appears dead.
Moisture sensor circuit: The board circuit that reads the moisture sensor bars inside the drum drifts out of calibration. Clothes come out damp on auto-dry cycles because the board thinks they are already dry, or the dryer runs excessively long.

Confirming Board Failure
Before spending $130-$290 on a board:
- Dead display: Verify 240V at the outlet and that both legs of the 240V supply are present (a tripped breaker leg gives 120V, enough for the gas valve but not the display on some models)
- No heat: Test the heating element continuity, thermal fuse, and cycling thermostat before condemning the board
- No tumble: Test the door switch and motor directly
- Erratic behavior: Reset the board by unplugging for 5 minutes. If erratic behavior returns immediately, the board is likely at fault
LG Smart Diagnosis (ThinQ app) can read error codes stored in the board's memory, but if the board's communication module has failed, ThinQ will not connect — which itself is diagnostic evidence.
Part Numbers and Pricing
| Part | LG Number | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Main control board (standard dryer) | EBR86692712 | $130-$290 |
| Main control board (WashTower) | EBR86692720 | $150-$320 |
| Aftermarket board | Various | $60-$150 |
| Professional replacement | — | $120-$220 |
WashTower models (WKE/WKG prefix) use a different board than standalone dryers because the stacked configuration shares some controls with the washer. Always match the full model number.

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for top panel and console screws
- Torx T15 — LG uses Torx on some console screws
- Multimeter — for verifying power at the outlet and testing individual relays
- Camera — photograph every wire connection before disconnecting
Replacement Steps
Disconnect power at the breaker (240V — both breaker poles).
Accessing the board: Remove the 2 Phillips screws at the rear of the top panel. Slide the top panel back and lift off. The control board is mounted in the console (the control panel at the top of the dryer). Remove the console mounting screws (2-4 screws, Phillips or Torx T15 depending on model). Tilt the console forward to access the board.
Swapping: Photograph all connectors. Disconnect each harness — LG uses keyed connectors with locking tabs. Remove the board mounting screws (3-4 Phillips). Install the new board, reconnect all harnesses.
Post-install: Reassemble the console and top panel. Restore power. Run a Timed Dry cycle for 10 minutes to verify heat, tumbling, and display operation. Then run an auto-dry cycle with a damp towel to verify the moisture sensor reads correctly — if clothes come out damp, the board may need a sensor calibration cycle (consult the service manual for your model).

Moisture Sensor Calibration
After a board swap, the moisture sensing circuit may not be calibrated to the sensor bars inside the drum. Run 2-3 full auto-dry loads to allow the board to learn the sensor baseline. If auto-dry cycles consistently over-dry or under-dry after 3 loads, the sensor bars themselves (two metal strips inside the drum near the lint filter) may be coated with dryer sheet residue — clean them with rubbing alcohol.
Preventing Board Failure
LG dryer boards are sensitive to voltage spikes, especially on the 240V supply. A dedicated 240V surge protector at the dryer outlet ($40-$60 for a commercial-grade unit) prevents the most common cause of board failure. Also ensure your dryer vent is not restricted — a clogged vent forces the dryer to run longer at higher temperatures, which accelerates relay wear from repeated cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dryer display is completely dark. Is the control board dead?
Check the outlet first — test for 240V with a multimeter. A tripped breaker (one leg of 240V) can cause a dark display. Also check the thermal fuse on some models — a blown thermal fuse can cut power to the board.
Does LG's 10-year Direct Drive motor warranty cover the dryer control board?
No. The 10-year warranty covers only the Direct Drive motor. The control board is covered under the standard 1-year parts and labor warranty.
Can I use a refurbished LG dryer control board?
Yes. Refurbished boards from reputable suppliers (ones that replace known-failure relays and capacitors) typically cost 30-50% less than new OEM boards and work well. Verify the refurbisher offers at least a 90-day warranty.
