The three real causes#
- A stuck valve, most often. Grease and grit migrate into the valve stem over time and hold it open, and repeated heat cycling wears the valve seat. There's no reliable clean-and-reuse here — the valve is replaced.
- A stripped knob or shaft. The knob drives the valve through a D-shaped or splined shaft; strip the knob's fitting or round the shaft and the knob turns while the valve doesn't. Swap the knob first, then the valve assembly if the shaft is chewed.
- A failed valve spring. The spring that closes the valve at off can break, letting gas pressure ease the valve back open. It isn't a standalone part, so the whole valve is replaced.
Checking it yourself#
Gas off, turn the knob: a free-spinning knob means the knob or shaft is stripped. Pull the knob and inspect the D-shaped or splined hole and the shaft for stripped teeth or a rounded flat. A good shaft takes a new knob; if the shaft rotates the valve yet gas keeps flowing, the valve has failed and a licensed tech replaces it.
