KitchenAid Gas Stove Burner Won't Ignite: Causes

Safety first#

Know where your gas shutoff is (behind or below the range). If you smell gas strongly and nothing is lit, stop — shut off the gas, air out the room, and call your utility. Never hold a match or lighter to a burner to test the gas while you diagnose.

KitchenAid's ignition setup#

KitchenAid gas ranges run on the Whirlpool platform with dual-fuel options and the EvenHeat burner system; the KFGG and KSGB series are the most common. Cooktop burners light with a ceramic spark electrode, while the oven uses a hot-surface igniter that glows to roughly 1,800 to 2,500 degrees F to open the oven gas valve.

The usual causes#

• A failed igniter (most common). A cracked or weak igniter can't make enough spark or heat. A cooktop electrode should throw a visible spark when you turn the knob; an oven hot-surface igniter should glow bright orange within about 30 to 60 seconds and read 40 to 400 ohms on a multimeter — over 400 ohms means it's weak and due for replacement.
• Clogged burner ports. If the igniter sparks but the gas won't catch, food and grease are blocking the ports. Pull the cap and head, clear each port with a straight pin (never a toothpick, which snaps off), and make sure the cap sits flat.
• A faulty spark module. The module sends the high-voltage pulses. No click on any burner points to the module; a single dead burner points to that electrode or its wiring. It lives behind the rear panel or under the cooktop and is shared by all burners.
• A gas valve that won't open. The oven valve only opens when the igniter draws enough current (around 3.2 to 3.6 amps); a glow-but-weak igniter never trips it. On the cooktop the valve is linked to the knob, so a worn stem can block it.
• Wiring faults. Loose or chewed connections between the igniter, module, and board cause intermittent or total no-light. Look for burn marks, loose spade connectors, or rodent damage.

Work through it#

Turn every cooktop burner to light — all silent means the module, one silent means that burner. Clean and fully dry the burner (moisture shorts the spark), check the electrode for cracks or carbon and a gap of about 1/8 inch, and test an oven igniter's resistance (40 to 400 ohms is healthy). Confirm the gas shutoff is fully open, and note any display error codes.

Before the holiday season#

A dead burner the week of a holiday meal is the worst timing, so test every burner now. As a stopgap you can light a cooktop burner with a long-reach lighter — but never light the oven by hand, since its safety valve depends on the igniter's current draw.
