What this Kenmore vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
Two federal complaint records are counted here: 373 CPSC SaferProducts incident reports naming a component on a Kenmore refrigerator between 2011 and 2025, and 170 doing the same for a Whirlpool refrigerator between 2011 and 2026. Each share belongs to its own column, and neither total counts refrigerators sold or in service.
Three gaps one way, one the other#
The ice maker takes 34% of the Whirlpool record and 9% of the Kenmore one — 58 filings against 35. That is 25 points, the widest difference here. The compressor follows at 8 points, 19% against 11%, 32 filings against 42. The wiring or power cord adds 6 points, 9% against 3%, sixteen filings against twelve.
Then the control board reverses it: 7% of the Kenmore record, 25 filings, against 2% of the Whirlpool one, four filings. Five points, in the other direction.
That single reversal does a lot of work on this page. Three same-direction gaps can always be explained by one record naming components more often than the other, and Whirlpool's record does concentrate: its top three rows hold 106 of its 170 filings. But if that were the whole story, the control board would lean Whirlpool too, and it does not — it leans the other way by a margin comparable to the wiring gap.
What each of the four rows actually rests on#
The ice maker is well supported on both sides, 58 filings against 35, and the gap is wide enough to survive a lot of reclassification. It is the most solid comparison on the page.
The compressor is well supported too — 32 against 42 — and here the shape of the numbers is worth noticing. Whirlpool's larger share sits on fewer filings than Kenmore's smaller one, because the two records have different denominators. A percentage compares emphasis, never counts.
The wiring gap, sixteen filings against twelve, is thinner but real on both sides.
The control board is the one to handle carefully. Kenmore's 25 filings make its row a genuine third place in that column. Whirlpool's four filings do not make its 2% a measurement of anything — they make it a small count.
The rows that agree#

Reading a mixed pattern honestly#
There is a useful distinction between a page whose gaps all point one way and a page whose gaps point in two. This one points in two, barely, and the right conclusion is neither "the reversal proves the other three" nor "the three outweigh the reversal".
What the reversal establishes is bounded: at least one component here separates the two records in a direction that a general difference in reporting style cannot produce. That makes the control board row the most interesting on the page, and it is unfortunate that the Whirlpool side of it is only four filings.
What the three same-direction gaps establish is also bounded. Taken together they are consistent with two explanations that this data cannot separate — that Whirlpool's reported trouble genuinely concentrates on the ice maker, the compressor and the wiring, or that a larger share of Whirlpool's complaints named a component at all. The first would be interesting; the second would be an artefact.
The practical consequence is to weigh the ice maker row heavily, since it is wide and well supported on both sides, and to treat the compressor and wiring gaps as corroborating detail rather than as two more independent results.
One asymmetry to keep in view#
The Kenmore record stops in 2025 and the Whirlpool one runs to 2026, so Kenmore's most recent submissions are missing. Over fourteen years that is a small omission, and it does not touch the ice maker or compressor rows — but it is one more reason not to read anything into the one-point rows.
Reading the pair together#
Both columns point a technician at the same two components, in opposite order: the ice maker first on a Whirlpool, the compressor first on a Kenmore. The genuine divergence is the third slot — the wiring on one side, the control board on the other — and that divergence is the part of this comparison least likely to be an artefact of how the two records were written.
