Is Your Kenmore Oven Smoking?

The three things that cause it#

• Grease on the bake element (most common). Spills and splatter carbonize on the element and smoke every time it heats up. A cleaning cycle plus a wipe-down usually clears it.
• New-oven burn-off. The first 2 to 3 uses of a new Kenmore smoke as the factory coatings cure. It's harmless and stops on its own — run the oven empty with the vent on.
• Element arcing. A cracked bake element can spark, giving off smoke with a sharp electrical smell. That's not a clean-it fix — stop using the oven and disconnect power, since the element needs replacing.

Cleaning it the right way for your Kenmore#

The cleaning cycle depends on who made your oven. A 790-series Kenmore is Frigidaire-made and uses Steam Clean, while a 665-series is Whirlpool-made and uses AquaLift or a standard self-clean. Check the model prefix on the serial plate so you run the cycle the oven was designed for. For heavier build-up, pull the racks and wipe the floor and element by hand once it's cool.

When to stop and call#

Smoke with an electrical or burning-plastic smell, visible sparking, or scorch marks means an arcing element or wiring — cut the breaker and don't run the oven. Gas connections and high-voltage element work are a technician's job. On a Kenmore under 8 to 10 years old, replacing a cracked element is well worth it over a new range.

Before the holiday baking season#

Nothing clears a kitchen faster than an oven smoking during the holiday meal, so burn off and wipe down the cavity a week ahead. Wipe up spills promptly year-round to keep them from carbonizing, and if the smoke ever turns electrical, book a visit rather than risking a cracked element mid-bake.
