Help! Kenmore Oven Door Stuck After Self-clean

Why the door locks#

During self-clean the oven runs hot enough to be dangerous, so a motorized latch bolts the door and only retracts once the cavity cools below roughly 550 degrees F. When something in that chain fails, the door stays shut after the cycle ends.

Which lock motor your Kenmore uses#

Because Kenmore ovens are built by different makers, the lock motor differs by model. A 790-series Kenmore is Frigidaire-made and uses a Frigidaire lock motor, while a 665-series is Whirlpool-made and uses lock motor WPW10107820. Read the model number off the serial plate before ordering the part.

The three usual causes#

• Stripped lock-motor gears (most common). The intense self-clean heat wears the lock-motor gear train so it can no longer pull the latch bar back, leaving the door locked. The motor is replaced.
• The board stuck in self-clean. Sometimes the control board doesn't exit self-clean after the timer completes, so it keeps the lock energized. A power cycle often clears it; if not, the board is at fault.
• A weakened hinge spring. Extreme temperatures can fatigue a door hinge spring, and the resulting misalignment keeps the latch from releasing cleanly.

Getting it open safely#

First, be patient — wait an hour or more after the cycle so the cavity drops below 550 degrees F. Then cut the breaker for 2 minutes and restore power; the board tries to retract the lock motor as it initializes. If the door is still locked after that, the gears have likely stripped and it's a job for a technician — forcing the door risks bending the latch or the door.

Before you run self-clean for the holidays#

A self-clean the night before a big meal is how people get locked out with no oven, so run it a few days ahead and confirm the door releases. General upkeep helps too: wipe spills before they carbonize, check oven-temperature accuracy every 6 months and recalibrate if it's off by more than 25 degrees F, and inspect the door gasket yearly. A Kenmore under 8 to 10 years old is well worth repairing — book a visit for a stuck lock.
