Kenmore Dishwasher Error Code Displayed? Causes
Most likely the code you're seeing belongs to whoever actually built your Kenmore — Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire — because Kenmore rebadges other makers' dishwashers, so the fix starts with reading your model-number prefix and then decoding the code, which is usually a drain, board-communication, or stuck-key fault.
The one thing most guides skip#
Kenmore dishwashers have no error-code system of their own. The codes on your display are the codes of the manufacturer that built the machine, and the model number tells you which one. Match the prefix first, then decode — using a Whirlpool chart on an LG-built unit will send you after the wrong part.
Identify your platform by model prefix#
| Model prefix | Built by | Code style |
|---|---|---|
| 665.xxxxx | Whirlpool | Letter-number, like F2E1, F8E4 |
| 630.xxxxx | LG | Two-letter, like OE, AE |
| 587.xxxxx | Frigidaire | i-number, like i20, i30 |
On Whirlpool-platform models without a digital display, the codes flash on the LED lights — for example, the Clean light flashing seven times signals F7.

Whirlpool platform (665) codes#
| Code | Meaning | Common cause / fix |
|---|---|---|
| F1E1 | Control-board communication | Corroded adapter harness between the boards |
| F2E1 | Stuck key | A shorted or held touchpad button |
| F5E1 / F5E2 | Door-lock fault | Failing door latch or lock circuit |
| F6E1 | Water inlet / fill | Inlet valve or supply restriction |
| F7 | Flow / heater fault | Heater circuit or flow sensor |
| F8E1 / F8E4 | Fill / drain fault | Blocked drain path or drain pump |
F1E1 deserves a note: on Kenmore versions of this platform, the most common cause is the Kenmore-specific adapter harness between the control board and the user-interface board developing corrosion. Reseating or replacing that harness clears many F1E1 faults without a new board.
LG platform (630) codes#
- OE — drain error. Water did not clear within the drain timeout. The LG-platform drain pump uses a bayonet connector that can vibrate loose over time, so check the drain hose for obstructions, pull the kick panel, and confirm the pump connector is fully seated and the motor runs.
- AE — anti-flood / leak. Water was detected in the base pan. Drain the pan and locate the leak source before restarting.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Frigidaire platform (587) codes#
- i20 — drain fault. Water remains in the tub after the drain sequence — functionally the same as Whirlpool's F8E4 and LG's OE. Clear the whole drain path, including the disposal knockout plug, a common installer oversight that blocks drainage on new installs.
- i30 — anti-flood device activated. Water in the base pan, equivalent to LG's AE. Drain the pan and find the leak.
How to clear a code on any Kenmore dishwasher#
- Soft reset: press Cancel or Start/Cancel to clear the current fault and drain the tub. If the code returns on the next cycle, the root cause is still there.
- Hard reset: cut power at the breaker for five minutes — ten minutes on the LG platform — to wipe the error memory and force the board to retest every system on restart.
- Diagnostic mode (Whirlpool 665 only): press Heated Dry and Normal alternately three times within four seconds to enter the test sequence and read stored codes.
The Real Cost of DIY

Finding the right part#
Once the code names the failed component, search parts by your full Kenmore model number. After you find the OEM part, you can often buy the identical Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire part number for roughly 10 to 30% less from third-party suppliers, since it is the same component under the Kenmore label.
No digital display? Count the flashes#
Older Kenmore units without a numeric display report the same faults by blinking a status light. The pattern maps to the code: a light flashing seven times, for example, corresponds to F7 on the Whirlpool platform. Count the flashes, note which light is blinking, and match the count to the code chart for your platform — it is slower to read than a display, but it points at the same failed component.

When a code returns after a reset#
A soft or hard reset clears the stored fault, but it does not fix anything — it only wipes the memory and lets the board retest on the next cycle. If the same code comes back, the underlying cause is still present, and the reset simply bought you one clean start. That is actually a useful diagnostic in itself: a code that clears and never returns was likely a one-off glitch or a power blip, while one that reappears every cycle is a genuine hardware fault to chase. Note whether the code returns immediately, only under a specific cycle, or intermittently, because that timing narrows the suspect the same way the code itself does.
Repair or replace?#
Most coded faults here — a harness, a door latch, a drain pump, an inlet valve — are inexpensive parts, so a Kenmore dishwasher throwing a code is usually well worth repairing once you have matched the platform and decoded the fault. Because the codes trace to mass-produced Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire parts rather than rare Kenmore-only components, sourcing is easy and the identical part often costs 10 to 30% less under the builder's number.
