Kenmore Dishwasher Error Codes — Complete Guide by OEM Platform
Decoding error codes on a Kenmore dishwasher requires one critical piece of knowledge that most online guides skip: Kenmore dishwashers do not have their own error code system. The error codes displayed on your Kenmore unit are the codes from whichever manufacturer actually built it. A Kenmore model 665.13242K900 displays Whirlpool error codes. A Kenmore model 630.12922710 displays LG error codes. Without knowing your platform, you cannot interpret the code correctly — and searching "Kenmore error code F5" will return results from the wrong manufacturer's system.
How to Identify Your Error Code System
Look at your model number first, then match the error code format:
Whirlpool Platform (Model 665.xxxxx)
- Code format: Letter-number combinations like F2E1, F5E2, F8E4
- Display method: LED lights on models without a digital display will flash in sequences (e.g., "Clean" light flashes 7 times = F7 code)
- Diagnostic entry: Press Heated Dry + Normal buttons alternately 3 times within 4 seconds
LG Platform (Model 630.xxxxx)
- Code format: Two-letter codes like OE, IE, HE, LE, AE, tE
- Display method: Shows directly on the digital countdown display
- Diagnostic entry: Hold Delay Start + Dual Zone for 3 seconds (some models: Hold Rinse + Spray for 3 seconds)
Frigidaire Platform (Model 587.xxxxx)
- Code format: Letter-number like i20, i30, i40, i50, i60
- Display method: Digital display shows code directly; on non-display models, LED flashes
- Diagnostic entry: Hold Start/Cancel + Delay Start for 5 seconds

Whirlpool Platform Error Codes (665 Models)
These are the error codes you will see on the most common Kenmore dishwasher platform:
F1E1 — Control Board Communication Error
The main electronic control board cannot communicate with the user interface board. On Kenmore versions of this platform, the most common cause is the Kenmore adapter harness between the two boards developing corrosion.
Fix: Check the ribbon cable connection between the main board and UI board. Clean connectors with electronic contact cleaner. If the Kenmore adapter harness shows green corrosion on any pin, replace it ($25–$55 part cost).
F2E1 — Button Stuck on User Interface
A membrane switch button is registering as continuously pressed. Steam infiltration through the door vent is the most common cause on Kenmore 665 models — the Kenmore membrane overlay can trap moisture underneath.
Fix: Disconnect power for 15 minutes to allow any trapped moisture to dissipate. If the code returns, replace the user interface board/membrane assembly. On Kenmore models, this is a Kenmore-specific part (not a generic Whirlpool UI board) because the button layout differs.
F5E1 — Door Latch Will Not Lock
The control board commanded the door lock solenoid but did not receive confirmation that the door latched. On Whirlpool-platform Kenmore units, the microswitch in the latch assembly is the typical failure point.
Fix: Test the door latch microswitch with a multimeter for continuity when actuated. Replace the latch assembly (WPW10275768) if the switch is intermittent or open.
F5E2 — Door Latch Will Not Unlock
The door lock solenoid will not release after the cycle completes. This can leave dishes trapped and the door unable to open.
Fix: Disconnect power for 3 minutes — the solenoid should release when power is removed. If the door remains locked, the solenoid plunger is mechanically stuck. Access through the inner door panel and manually release, then replace the latch assembly.
F6E1 — Water Inlet Failure
The dishwasher detected no incoming water during the fill cycle. The control board expected the float switch to register rising water within 8 minutes of opening the inlet valve.
Fix: Verify the water supply valve under the sink is open. Check the inlet valve screen for sediment blockage (accessible behind the kick panel on the lower left). Test the inlet valve solenoid for 120V during a fill command. Replace the valve if power reaches it but no water flows.
F8E4 — Drain Pump Failure
The dishwasher attempted to drain but the water level did not decrease within the expected timeframe. The "Clean" light flashing 7 times is the non-display equivalent of this code.
Fix: Check the drain hose for kinks, especially where it loops up to the air gap or disposal connection. Inspect the drain pump impeller for blockage (accessible through the kick panel). Test the pump motor for 120V during drain — if powered but not running, replace the drain pump.
F8E1 — Water Supply or Float Switch Error
Slow fill detected or the float switch is stuck in the raised position, reporting overfill when the tub may actually be empty.
Fix: With the dishwasher pulled out, check the float mechanism in the front left corner of the tub floor. Ensure it moves freely up and down. Clean any debris preventing float travel. If float moves freely but code persists, the float switch itself (mounted under the tub) has failed.
LG Platform Error Codes (630 Models)
OE — Drain Error
Water did not evacuate within the drain timeout period. On LG-platform Kenmore dishwashers, the drain pump uses a bayonet connector that can twist loose from vibration over time.
Fix: Check the drain hose for obstructions. Verify the drain pump connector has not partially disengaged by removing the kick panel and inspecting the pump connection. Listen for the pump motor activating — if silent, test for voltage at the pump connector during a drain cycle.
IE — Water Inlet Error
No water fill detected. The LG platform requires minimum 20 PSI water pressure to open the inlet valve.
Fix: Test water pressure at the supply line (use a garden hose pressure gauge). Check the inlet valve filter screen. Replace the inlet valve if the screen is clear and pressure is adequate but no water enters.
HE — Heater Error
The water temperature did not rise to the expected level within the heating timeout. On LG-platform Kenmore models, the heating element is concealed behind the sump (not visible in the tub) and the thermistor provides feedback.
Fix: Test the thermistor resistance (should be approximately 50k ohms at room temperature). If the thermistor reads correctly, test the heater element for continuity (should show 10-20 ohms). Replace the failed component.
LE — Motor Error
The circulation motor is not running or drawing excessive current. This code often appears after a power surge or when debris jams the main wash impeller.
Fix: Remove the filter basket and inspect the wash impeller for obstructions. A broken piece of dishware can wedge between the impeller blades. If clear but the code persists, the circulation pump motor windings may be shorted — test resistance across motor leads (should be 3-8 ohms).
AE — Leak Detection
The leak sensor in the base pan has detected water. The dishwasher will not operate until the pan is dry and the sensor resets.
Fix: Pull the dishwasher out and tilt back to drain the base pan. Locate and repair the leak source (common: lower hose clamp, sump gasket, or door gasket at bottom corners). Once dry, the sensor resets automatically.
tE — Thermistor Error
The temperature sensor is reading out of range — either open circuit or shorted.
Fix: Access the thermistor at the sump housing. Test resistance — should change smoothly with temperature changes. An open reading (infinite ohms) means the sensor wire has broken internally. Replace the thermistor.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Frigidaire Platform Error Codes (587 Models)
i20 — Drain Fault
Water remains in the tub after the drain sequence. Functions identically to Whirlpool's F8E4 and LG's OE codes.
Fix: Clear the drain path — check hose, pump, and disposal knockout plug (a common installer oversight that blocks drainage from new installations).
i30 — Anti-Flood Device Activated
Equivalent to LG's AE code. Water detected in the base pan.
Fix: Same approach as LG platform — drain the pan and locate the leak.
i50 — Circulation Pump Fault
The main wash motor is not functioning correctly.
Fix: Check for obstructions in the wash pump. Test motor leads for correct resistance.
i60 — Heater Fault
Water temperature not rising. The Frigidaire platform uses a flow-through heater that can scale up in hard water areas.
Fix: Descale the heater if accessible, or replace. Test thermistor and heater element separately.

How to Clear Error Codes on Any Kenmore Dishwasher
Soft reset (all platforms): Press Cancel or Start/Cancel to clear the current fault and drain the tub. If the code returns after restarting, the root cause remains.
Hard reset: Disconnect power at the breaker for 5 minutes (10 minutes for LG platform). This clears the error memory and forces the control board to retest all systems on next startup.
Diagnostic mode (Whirlpool 665 only): After entering diagnostic mode (Heated Dry + Normal alternated 3 times), the board will cycle through each function — this helps identify intermittent issues by testing components systematically rather than waiting for a failure during normal use.
