Jenn-Air Gas Range Smells of Gas — Causes & Fix
A Jenn-Air gas range gives off a brief, normal whiff of gas as a burner lights, but a smell that lingers while cooking or is present with the burners off is a leak. If the odor is strong, leave without touching a switch or knob and call the gas utility from outside. A mild, traceable smell is usually a burner cap that…
Normal whiff or genuine leak#
The short smell in the instant before a Jenn-Air burner catches is just unburned gas and clears immediately. A leak smells different in duration: it stays while the burner runs cleanly, it lingers after you shut the burner off, or it hangs around the range with nothing lit. Judge by whether the odor goes away on its own or persists.
If the smell is strong, act on safety#
Heavy gas odor calls for evacuation, not investigation. Keep away from the knobs, the wall switches, and anything electrical that could spark, get everyone out, and call your gas provider from a safe spot outside. Leave the leak-finding to the utility when the smell is strong.

The downdraft can spread the odor#
Jenn-Air's downdraft heritage means many models pull air down and out near the burners, and that airflow can carry a burner's gas smell across the kitchen, making the source harder to place. If the odor seems everywhere, switch the downdraft off while you check each burner individually so you can localize it.
Reseat the cap and check the valve#
A tilted burner cap lets raw gas slip by before it burns, producing a steady smell on that burner. Lift the cap and head, clean the seat, and set the cap back flat. If a single burner smells while lit even after reseating, the burner valve or its seal may be worn and need replacing.

Supply connections and next steps#
A smell with all burners off is a supply-side leak — the connector, fittings, or regulator — that a technician leak-tests joint by joint. With the cooking season approaching, do not let any gas odor linger. For anything beyond the brief ignition whiff, book an EasyBear technician to leak-test the range with Jenn-Air parts on hand.
