Step-by-step#
1. Confirm the diagnosis#
Match the fault to a code before you buy parts. The common WTW codes are F7 E1 (shift actuator or motor sensing — by far the most frequent), F5 E1 (lid switch), F8 E1 (water flow), and F0 E2 (over-suds). Enter diagnostic mode per the tech sheet — usually a three-button sequence within four seconds — and let the machine tell you which circuit is unhappy. Many codes point at wiring or a sensor rather than a big mechanical part.
2. Open the machine#
Take the console off (two Phillips screws at the ends, then flip it back). Release the cabinet spring clips by pushing a putty knife in about 2.5 inches from each front corner — there are three clips — and lift the top on its rear hinges. For full access, pull the two lower rear screws and lift the cabinet straight off the base. Before you unplug any harness, photograph each connector: the colours repeat across harnesses and one photo saves a lot of reassembly guesswork.
3. Locate the part#
With the machine open, find the component your code pointed to. On WTW top-loaders the usual suspects are the shift actuator (the F7 E1 failure), the motor coupler, the suspension rods, the lid switch, and the drive motor. Inspect it before touching anything — look for burn marks, corrosion, mechanical damage, or simply a wire that has fallen off.
4. Remove the faulty component#
Release each harness by pressing its locking tab and pulling straight back; never drag on the wires. Note where every screw or clip came from. For anything with a fluid line, keep a towel and shallow pan ready. If a screw resists a Phillips, try Torx T20 before you round it off.
5. Fit the replacement#
Set the new part in the exact orientation of the old one, secure the mounting hardware first, then reconnect the harnesses until each locking tab clicks home. A half-seated connector is the number-one cause of a repair that fails immediately, and it can damage the control board.
6. Test before you close up#
Leave the machine open, plug it in, and re-enter diagnostic mode to exercise just the part you replaced — no full cycle needed. Confirm it responds, then unplug and reassemble.
7. Reassemble and run a full cycle#
Refit the panels in reverse. On a top-loader, hook the rear first and push forward until the spring clips snap. Run a complete Normal cycle with warm water and a small load, watching for the original symptom, leaks, noises, and any returning codes across the whole run.
Whirlpool-specific notes#
- Adaptive Wash (WFW): after any sensor or board swap it may need a couple of cycles to relearn load sensing.
- Deep Water Wash (WTW): this overrides the auto-fill sensor for extra water — try it before diagnosing a fill complaint.
- Shift actuator (WTW): the F7 E1 code is almost always the actuator, so test it before condemning the motor.

- A code the instant you reassemble: a harness is not fully seated. Reopen and recheck every connector you touched.
- Worse vibration than before: a counterweight bolt was left loose (WFW) or the cabinet did not reseat on its clips (WTW).
- Fills then drains straight away: the drain hose was pushed deeper into the standpipe during the repair. Reseat it to a 6-8 inch insertion depth.
