How to Replace the Whirlpool Washer Lid Switch
The lid switch on a Whirlpool WTW top-load washer is a safety interlock that stops the spin when the lid opens. Replacing it is a beginner job of about 15-25 minutes, and a failed one commonly shows as an F5 E1 code or a washer that fills and agitates but will not spin.

Step-by-step#
1 - Confirm the diagnosis. The lid switch shows as F5 E1, while related top-load codes include F7 E1 (shift actuator), F8 E1 (water flow), and F0 E2 (oversuds). Enter diagnostic mode per the tech sheet, typically a three-button sequence within 4 seconds, and cross-check the code before replacing anything.
2 - Open the console and cabinet. Remove the two Phillips screws at the ends of the console and flip it back. Release the cabinet spring clips by pushing a putty knife in about 2.5 inches from each front corner; there are three clips in all. Lift the top on its rear hinges, and for full access pull the two rear lower screws and lift the cabinet off the base.
3 - Photograph the wiring. Before you unplug anything, shoot the connections. Whirlpool color-codes its connectors, but overlapping colors between harnesses cause reassembly confusion, and one photo saves a lot of it.
4 - Remove the old switch. The lid switch sits at the lid frame. Press the locking tab and pull each harness straight off by the connector, never the wire, then remove the mounting screws or clips, noting their positions.
5 - Fit the replacement. Set the new switch in the exact orientation of the old one, secure the hardware first, then reconnect each harness until the tab clicks. A partly seated connector is the most common cause of an immediate repeat failure.
6 - Verify in diagnostic mode. With the machine still open, plug in briefly and enter diagnostic mode to actuate the switch and confirm the control registers the lid state without running a full cycle. Then unplug and reassemble.
7 - Reassemble and full-test. Refit the top by aligning the rear hooks first, then push forward until the spring clips snap, and reinstall the console. Run a Normal cycle with a small warm load and watch that it fills, agitates, drains, and reaches spin without the code returning.
If something is still off#
- The code returns right after reassembly: a harness is not fully seated, so re-check every connector you touched.
- The machine still will not spin: the lid switch may be fine and the fault lies in the lid-lock striker alignment or the control's read of it.
- New vibration: the cabinet did not reseat on all three spring clips; verify each one.
