Whirlpool Washing Machine Inlet Valve Swap
A no-fill or slow-fill Whirlpool washer usually needs a new water inlet valve, a beginner-to-intermediate job of about 25 to 40 minutes. Confirm the valve rather than a sensor first, then swap it from the top-rear of the cabinet.

Every Whirlpool washer ships with a folded technical sheet hidden inside the machine: inside the console on a WTW top-loader, or behind the lower toe panel or taped to the rear panel on a WFW front-loader. It lists your exact model's wiring diagram, diagnostic-mode entry, and part numbers, so find it before you buy anything. Whirlpool builds these machines for serviceability, and the fasteners are almost always Phillips #2 or Torx T20.

Step-by-step#
1 - Diagnose before you buy. A failed inlet valve shows up as no fill, a slow fill, or a rear leak at the hose ports. Rule out obvious causes first: fully open wall valves and clean the small mesh screens inside the hose fittings at the machine end. If the panel shows a code, read it against the tech sheet before replacing parts. For reference, Whirlpool's common codes are F5 E2 (door lock), F9 E1 (drain timeout), F0 E5 (suds lock), F3 E1/E2 (pressure sensor), and F2 E1/E3 (motor or MCU). Enter diagnostic mode by holding the delay button for 3 seconds, then pressing power.
2 - Open the cabinet. Remove the top panel, which is held by 3 Phillips screws at the rear; slide it back and lift. On most models the inlet valve sits at the upper-rear, right where the external fill hoses thread in, so you rarely need to pull the front panel for this job. Photograph each wire connector before you unplug anything, because Whirlpool's color coding repeats across harnesses.
3 - Identify the valve. Trace the two external hose fittings inward to the valve body and its solenoids. While you are in there, note the tech-sheet part numbers you may want on hand for related repairs, such as the door bellow W10340443, drain pump WPW10730972, MCU W10756692, shock absorbers WPW10739670, and door lock W10838613. Inspect the valve for burn marks or a loose harness before condemning it.
4 - Remove the old valve. Turn off and disconnect the fill hoses at the rear, catching the trapped water in a bucket. Press the locking tab and pull each electrical connector straight off, never by the wires. Squeeze the spring clamps on the internal outlet hoses and slide them back, then unscrew the valve's mounting screws.
5 - Install the replacement. Seat the new valve in the original orientation and secure the mounting screws first. Reconnect the internal outlet hoses and clamps, then push each electrical connector until the locking tab clicks. A partly seated connector is the most common cause of an immediate post-repair fault. Wrap the external hose threads with Teflon tape and hand-tighten plus a quarter turn.
6 - Verify in diagnostic mode. With the cabinet still open, plug in and run the diagnostic fill test so you can watch the valve energize without a full cycle. Confirm water enters the detergent drawer, not straight into the drum, then unplug.
7 - Reassemble and full-test. Refit the top panel, aligning the rear hooks and pushing forward until the clips snap. Turn the water back on slowly and check every joint under pressure, then run a Normal warm cycle with a small load and watch for leaks or a returning code.
Whirlpool-specific notes#
- Adaptive Wash (WFW): after replacing a sensor or board, the load-sensing algorithm may need 2 to 3 cycles to recalibrate.
- Deep Water Wash (WTW): this option overrides the auto-fill sensor to add water; try it before assuming a fill fault.
- Shift actuator (WTW): an F7 E1 code is almost always the actuator, not the motor, so test it first.

Troubleshooting post-repair#
- Machine overfills: an internal outlet hose is on the wrong port. Swap the distribution hoses.
- Still slow to fill: debris from the work lodged in a hose screen. Clean the screens again.
- Leak at the rear: a missing or pinched hose washer. Reseat or replace it.
