How Whirlpool reads temperature#
The control board runs AccuBake off the RTD probe, cycling the elements to hold your setpoint. When the sensor drifts, the board simply acts on bad numbers — hot, cold, or swinging. Whirlpool's F#E# system flags the sensor circuit as an F3 fault, and a probe reading lower than reality is the dangerous case: the board keeps heating past the setpoint and can trip the high-limit safety thermostat, which then needs a manual reset.
Diagnose before you disassemble#
Enter diagnostics (press Cancel, then the model's three-button sequence within four seconds) and note stored codes — F3E1 alongside F3E2 usually shares one wiring cause rather than two faults. Then cut the 240V breaker, pull the probe, and meter it: about 1,080-1,100 ohms at room temperature, climbing toward roughly 1,500 ohms at 350°F. A reading far off that is a failed sensor; a good reading sends you to the harness instead.

Replace the probe#
- Confirm the 240V breaker is off before touching the wiring.
- Remove the one or two screws holding the probe bracket at the upper-rear of the cavity — most are Torx T20.
- Photograph the two-wire connector, release its tab, and draw the old probe out through the wall.
- Plug the new probe in until it clicks, then seat the bracket on the original holes.
- Check the rod hangs clear of the racks and rear wall so it senses air, not metal.
Clear codes and confirm#
Restore power, re-enter diagnostics, and clear the stored F3 codes. Bake at 350°F for about half an hour and verify a center-rack thermometer holds within roughly 10°F. If the high-limit thermostat tripped during the failure, reset it so the oven will heat again. Should the F3 code return with a known-good sensor, the fault is in the wiring run to the board, which is where a technician earns their keep.
