How to Replace a Whirlpool Coil Burner Receptacle

Why receptacles fail#

Whirlpool's coil burners plug into a terminal block whose spring contacts clamp the element prongs and hand off 240V. Every heat-and-cool cycle relaxes those springs a little; eventually the grip loosens, resistance rises at the joint, and the connection arcs and browns. Because this is a cooktop fault rather than an oven one, the F#E# board never flags it — the burner simply goes weak or dead.

Prove the element is good first#

Before ordering a part, move a known-good same-size element into the dead position. If that element also fails to heat there, the receptacle is confirmed; if it works, the original element was the culprit. You can also cut the 240V breaker and meter the element itself — a healthy coil reads roughly 20-50 ohms, and an open reading means the element, not the socket, is finished.

Reach and swap the receptacle#

1. Switch off the range breaker and confirm it is dead.
2. Lift the hinged cooktop or remove a rear panel to expose the receptacle and its two leads.
3. Photograph the wiring, then free the receptacle from its mounting bracket.
4. Transfer the leads to the new receptacle one at a time so nothing gets crossed, snugging each terminal.
5. Clip the new receptacle into the bracket, lower the cooktop, and reseat the element.

Confirm the repair#

Restore power and run the burner up through its heat settings. The coil should glow evenly with no sparking at the socket, and the receptacle should end up warm rather than scorching. If the new receptacle still cannot pass full current, trace the two leads back toward the infinite switch — a burnt lead or a failing switch produces the same dead-burner symptom.
