Whirlpool ranges use the F#E# code system, so the board tells you a lot before you open it: F1 is a control-board fault, F2 an oven over-temperature, F3 a sensor open or short, F5 a door latch, and F9 a door lock. A failing capacitor destabilises the board's supply voltage and can trigger several of these at once — paired codes like F3E1 and F3E2 usually share one cause.
Before You Start#
- Tools: a Torx T20 driver — Whirlpool's main fastener, around 80% of the screws — a 1/4" hex nut driver, a Phillips #2, needle-nose pliers, and a digital multimeter.
- Part: a matching 470uF 25V electrolytic; a 35V is a safe higher-voltage swap, but never drop below 25V. Confirm the board part number from the rating plate inside the door frame.
- Time and level: 30-60 minutes, intermediate.
- Safety: cut the range's 240V breaker, and close the gas valve on gas models. Range elements run at 240V, so never work with power connected.

Diagnose, Then Recap#
- Enter diagnostic mode — press Cancel, then the model-specific three-button sequence within 4 seconds (the tech sheet is taped inside the console or behind the lower drawer) — and record every stored code.
- Cut power, remove the rear control-panel cover, photograph the harnesses, and release each connector by its locking tab.
- Lift the board out — mostly Torx T20, with some 1/4" hex at the panel — and find the 470uF 25V cap in the power-supply section.
- Look for a swollen top, a popped vent cross, or brown leakage at the base; even a clean-looking cap can be the cause once other faults are ruled out.
- Desolder both leads, noting the stripe as the negative lead, and wick the through-holes clear.
- Fit the replacement to polarity and to matching or higher voltage, solder clean joints, and seat the board back on its plastic tabs — snug, not over-tight, since they crack.
- Restore power, re-enter diagnostics to clear the stored codes, bake at 350°F for 30 minutes, and confirm the reading holds within 10°F. Watch it for 48 hours.
Troubleshooting#
- Same code returns: check the harness between the board and the faulted part — a corroded connector mimics a bad component and can kill new caps.
- A new code appears: a connector probably is not fully seated; reopen and click each one home.
- No display at all: look for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker from a momentary short during reassembly.
- Repeat failures: trace the circuit on the tech-sheet diagram and meter each junction to find where the signal is lost.
