Samsung Washer tE Error: Causes & Fix
tE, tE1 and tE2 are temperature codes, and on a Samsung front-loader they lead to the thermistor: a small probe-style sensor set into the tub wall below the waterline. When it drifts or opens, the control board loses its temperature reading and either refuses to start a cycle or aborts partway through. Swapping it is…
Confirming it is the sensor#
Three symptoms belong to this part specifically:
- a tE or tE1 code on the display;
- water that never heats even though the element is healthy;
- water that gets far too hot, which happens when the sensor reads low and the board keeps calling for more heat.
Meter the thermistor at room temperature and compare against the resistance figure in your model's service manual. The reading is the whole diagnosis — Samsung publishes specific values per model, and there is no generic number worth trusting here. One caution: a sensor that measures inside spec can still be failing at a loose connector rather than in the probe, so check the connection before condemning the part.
Diagnostic mode, entered by holding Temp and Spin together for 3-5 seconds on most WF models, runs component tests that will corroborate what your meter found.
Buying the right one#
The model number lives on the label inside the door frame on a front-load machine, or under the lid on a top-loader, and it is what the parts catalogue needs. Samsung builds model-specific variants of sensors, so a probe that looks identical but carries a different suffix can be electrically wrong for your control board even though it fits the hole.

Reaching a part that sits below the waterline#
Most components on these machines come out after either the top panel (3 Phillips screws at the rear, slide back, lift) or the front panel, which needs the top off first, then the control panel, the boot seal clamp and the front panel screws. The drain pump is the exception and comes out through the lower kick panel alone.
Because the thermistor sits under the water level, expect water. Have the towels down before you disturb anything, and know that the drain pump area alone holds 1-2 cups between the filter and the housing.
Photograph the wiring before you unplug it. Samsung's connectors are colour-coded and keyed to a single port each, but a picture removes any doubt on the way back.
The swap itself#
Press the release tab and pull each connector straight out — pulling on the wires themselves damages the crimp. Mounting screws are Phillips #2, as they are throughout the Samsung washer line, and any hose clamp comes off with pliers on the spring.
Note the orientation of the old probe, then seat the new one identically. Hardware first, hoses next with the spring clamps fully engaged, and the harness last, pushing each connector until it clicks positively. Check that no wire has been trapped between components or panels before you close up.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Prove it before the panels go back#
Run a fill-and-drain and inspect every connection you touched for seepage, then power on and confirm no code appears. Only then reassemble, counting screws against your tray, and run a complete Normal cycle as the final check that the water reaches the temperature the cycle asked for.
If the code comes back#
| What happens | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| Same code after the swap | Connector not fully seated; if it is, the control board is the real fault |
| A new code appears | A different harness was left disconnected during reassembly |
| Works, then fails intermittently | Damaged wire insulation, or corroded pins losing contact under vibration |
| Water seeping after the repair | A spring clamp only partly engaged — even slightly loose, it weeps under pump pressure |
Sensors on this platform fail open rather than short, so an infinite reading is the expected signature of a dead one, and the board talks to them over low-voltage signals.
Same symptom after a new part usually means the diagnosis was wrong, and paying for a second wrong part is how this gets expensive. Book a diagnostic and we will meter it before anything is ordered.
