How to Replace a Samsung Washer Stator and Rotor
When a Samsung direct-drive washer posts a 3E or 8E motor code and the drum will not spin, the stator or rotor of the brushless motor has usually failed. Replacing the motor assembly is an intermediate job of about 30 to 60 minutes, and Samsung's design lets you swap the stator or rotor without pulling the whole tub.
Samsung front-load and top-load washers drive the drum with a direct-drive brushless motor bolted to the back of the outer tub: a fixed stator that carries the windings and a hall sensor, and a rotor — a magnet ring — that spins around it. 1. Confirm the motor is the fault#
Run Samsung's diagnostic mode — on most WF front-load models you hold Temp and Spin together for 3 to 5 seconds — and watch for a 3E or 8E code, which flags a motor or hall-sensor communication failure. A drum that stays still while the board clearly tries to drive it, or a burnt smell at the back of the cabinet, backs up the call. Where you can reach the terminals, read the stator windings on the meter; an open winding confirms a dead stator.
2. Order the right part by model number#
Find the model number on the label inside the door frame on WF-series front-loaders, or under the lid on WA-series top-loaders. Samsung uses model-specific motor variants, so a part that looks identical but carries a different suffix may not talk to your control board. Match the number exactly before you buy.
3. Reach the motor#
The direct-drive motor sits on the rear of the outer tub, so most of this job happens through the back panel. Unplug the machine, close the water valves, and remove the rear panel screws to expose the rotor and stator. Photograph the wiring — Samsung uses keyed, color-coded connectors, but a picture removes any doubt on reassembly.
4. Remove the rotor, then the stator#
Hold the rotor still and back out the large center bolt, then pull the rotor magnet straight off the shaft — keep it clear of tools and filings, since the magnets are strong. Unplug the stator harness and the hall-sensor connector, remove the ring of stator bolts, and lift the stator off. Note the orientation of each part before it comes free.
5. Fit the new assembly#
Set the new stator in the same orientation, start its bolts by hand, then tighten them evenly in a cross pattern so the ring seats flat against the tub. Reconnect the stator and hall-sensor plugs until each clicks. Slide the rotor back on and refit the center bolt. Check that no wire is pinched and that harnesses follow their original clips.
6. Test before closing up#
With the rear panel still off, restore power and run the diagnostic spin test. The drum should build speed smoothly with no grinding, wobble, or returning 3E or 8E code. If it spins clean, reinstall the rear panel and run a full Normal cycle as a final check.
