Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Turn off water and power#
Find the water shutoff valve (usually behind or below the fridge on the cold-water line) and turn it fully clockwise, then unplug the refrigerator and wait 5 minutes for residual charge to drain from the control-board capacitors.
Step 2 — Remove the ice bucket#
Open the freezer and pull the ice bucket straight out by pressing the release tabs or lifting the front edge — on Samsung RF models it rides on guide rails. Empty any remaining ice into the sink and set the bucket aside for reinstallation after the swap.
Step 3 — Disconnect the ice maker harness#
Find the wire-harness connector on the left side of the ice maker (visible once the bucket is out), press the locking tab, and pull it straight apart, never by the wires. Some Samsung models add a secondary connector for the ice maker sensor — disconnect that too if present.
Step 4 — Remove the mounting screw#
Samsung ice makers are held by a single Phillips #2 screw on the left mounting bracket. Remove it; on some models there is an additional right-side screw or a mounting tab that needs a slight downward rotation to release. With the screw out, the ice maker lifts up and pulls forward off its mounting hooks.
Step 5 — Remove the water supply tube#
The fill tube connects to the back of the ice maker via a quick-connect or compression fitting. For quick-connect, press the release collar and pull the tube free; for compression, loosen the nut with a wrench. Keep a towel ready for the residual water that drips from the tube.

Step 7 — Install the drain clip (DA82-02367A, recommended)#
If you bought the drain-clip kit, install it now while the ice maker is out and the area is open. The clip attaches to the defrost heater and extends into the drain hole, conducting heat to keep the drain from refreezing. Position the copper strap per the included instructions — this is what prevents the ice buildup from recurring and destroying your new assembly.
Step 8 — Connect water to the new ice maker#
Attach the fill tube to the new DA97-15217D assembly. For quick-connect, push the tube in until it seats past the internal O-ring (about 3/4 inch) and tug gently to confirm it locked; for compression, tighten the nut to finger-tight plus a quarter turn.
Step 9 — Mount the new assembly#
Hang the new ice maker on the mounting hooks at the rear of the freezer wall — it hangs on the hooks, then pivots down into its operating position — and secure it with the Phillips #2 screw. Do not overtighten, since the bracket attaches to a plastic housing.
Step 10 — Reconnect the harnesses and test#
Plug the harness connectors back together until the locking tabs click, open the water valve and check the fill-tube connection for leaks, then plug in the refrigerator. The inverter compressor clicks briefly at startup (normal). The ice maker begins its first fill within 1-2 hours once the freezer reaches 0 degrees F, and first ice typically appears within 6-8 hours.
Step 11 — Reinstall the bucket and verify#
Slide the ice bucket back onto the guide rails and push it fully rearward until the auger drive coupling engages (a slight resistance, then a seat). After 8-12 hours, confirm the bucket is filling and test the dispenser. Give it the overnight before you judge the swap: a freezer opened repeatedly during the work sits above harvest temperature for a while, and a new assembly that looks idle the same evening is usually just waiting on the cabinet to pull back down to temperature.
Troubleshooting Common Issues#
If the new ice maker makes no ice within 12 hours:
- Fill tube frozen: if the freezer was set too cold or the door was open during installation, the tube may have iced over before the first cycle — thaw the tube entrance with a hair dryer and run a forced defrost (hold Energy Saver + Fridge for 8 seconds) to clear ice.
- Harness not fully connected: even a millimeter gap stops the board communicating with the ice maker — disconnect and firmly reconnect until it clicks.
- Water supply not restored: verify the shutoff valve is fully open and check for kinks in the supply line between the valve and the fridge.
- Ice maker arm in the "off" position: some Samsung models have a physical arm or switch that must be down/on — verify it is not stuck raised.
- Board not recognizing the new unit: unplug the fridge for 5 minutes to reset the board, since some Samsung models need a power cycle to initialize a new ice maker.
