How to Replace a Maytag Washer Water Inlet Valve
A Maytag washer that fills slowly, fills cold-only, or throws F8E1 usually needs its dual-solenoid inlet valve replaced, a beginner-to-intermediate job of about 30 to 45 minutes at the rear of the machine. Because Maytag runs the Whirlpool platform, Whirlpool cross-reference valves fit.
One valve, two solenoids#
The inlet valve mounts at the rear where the fill hoses connect, and each of its two solenoids can fail on its own, which is why a Maytag can lose just hot or just cold. Test both before condemning the valve, and if only one coil is dead you still replace the whole assembly since the coils are not sold separately.

Step-by-step#
1 - Shut off water and pull the hoses. Close both wall valves, unplug the washer, and pull it out for rear access. Drain both fill hoses into a bucket and mark which is hot (left) and cold (right).
2 - Open the top. On an MHW front-loader, remove the 3 Phillips screws at the rear of the top panel, slide it back about an inch, and lift it off; the valve is at the upper rear. On an MVW top-loader, unscrew and tilt the control console forward, then remove the top panel's rear screws and lift it off.
3 - Test the solenoids. Unplug each solenoid connector and read its resistance: about 500 to 1,500 ohms per coil is healthy, an open (OL) reading means a burned-out coil, and under 200 ohms means a shorted one. Check both, since either can fail alone.
4 - Disconnect wiring and internal hoses. Photograph the connections, then release the solenoid connectors by their locking tabs and slide the spring clamps back on the internal outlet hoses with pliers before pulling those hoses off.
5 - Remove the old valve. Back out the two Torx T20 screws holding the valve bracket to the rear frame and draw the valve out, noting its orientation so the hot and cold inlets line up with the external hose positions.
6 - Fit the new valve. Set the replacement in the same orientation, snug the two Torx T20 screws without overtightening the plastic body, reconnect the internal hoses with their clamps, and click the solenoid connectors back on.
7 - Reconnect and test. Thread the external hoses back on, hot left and cold right, hand-tight plus a quarter turn, then open the water slowly and check every joint for leaks. Refit the panel or console, plug in, and run a Normal cycle to confirm a proper fill at the right temperature with no leaks.
Maytag diagnostics and features#
- Maytag shares Whirlpool's F#E# codes: F8E1 is low water flow (valve not opening or low pressure), F8E2 is excess water (valve stuck open), and F8E3 is an overflow (valve failed open).
- Diagnostic mode is the platform standard: press three specific buttons in sequence within 8 seconds, and the test cycle exercises the inlet valve among other parts.
- The Extra Power button uses a separate solenoid circuit on the board; if only Extra Power fails to add water, suspect that circuit, not the main valve.

Warranty note#
Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers the drive motor and stainless wash basket but not the inlet valve, which falls under the standard 1-year parts-and-labor coverage. Replacing the valve yourself does not void the motor warranty as long as you do not damage the motor, since the two are physically separate.
