Replace LG Stove Infinite-Heat Burner Switch
Replacing a failed infinite-heat burner switch on an LG rotary-knob range restores accurate stovetop heat control. Plan on 30-40 minutes at an intermediate skill level.
Each surface burner on an LG freestanding range is fed by its own infinite-heat switch tucked behind the control panel. The switch pulses power on and off at varying duty cycles to set heat anywhere between OFF and HIGH. Three failure signatures point straight to it: a burner locked on HIGH at every knob position means the internal contacts have welded shut, a burner that never heats (yet works when swapped to another receptacle) means the contacts are open, and heat that wanders up and down means the cycling mechanism is worn. Note that LG ranges with electronic touch controls drive their elements through solid-state relays instead, and follow a different procedure entirely.

Step-by-step#
1 - Pin down the failed switch. Match the misbehaving burner to its knob. Stuck on HIGH means welded contacts, dead-cold means open contacts, and erratic heat means a tired cycling cam. Confirming which burner is affected keeps you from pulling the wrong switch.
2 - Open the control panel. Pull the knobs straight off, then take out the 6-8 Phillips screws holding the rear panel cover. On some LG cabinets the panel releases from the top once the lower-edge screws are out. The row of infinite-heat switches now sits exposed behind their knob positions.
3 - Photograph the wiring. Every switch carries 4-6 spade terminals: two LINE terminals for incoming power, two LOAD terminals feeding the element, and sometimes one or two pilot-light terminals. Shoot several angles before you touch a wire, since colors and positions must be copied exactly onto the new part.
4 - Label, disconnect, and remove. Tag each wire with tape marking its terminal, then work the spade connectors off with needle-nose pliers, gripping the connector rather than the wire. Back out the retaining nut on the panel face or the bracket screw and slide the old switch free.
5 - Match the replacement. The new switch must equal the original in wattage rating, terminal count, and shaft type so it accepts your knob. LG pairs switch ratings to element size: a 6-inch element typically needs a 1500W switch and an 8-inch element a 2600W switch. Fitting an undersized switch on a large element cooks the switch and shortens its life.
6 - Mount the new switch. Seat it in the original position and orientation, with the shaft protruding through the panel hole at the same depth so the knob engages. Snug the retaining nut or bracket until there is no play.
7 - Rewire from your photos. Return each labeled wire to its matching terminal and push the spades on until fully seated. LINE terminals take power from the range harness; LOAD terminals send it out to the element through the receptacle. Confirm every joint is tight.
8 - Test and close up. Refit the panel and knobs, restore power, and run the burner through its full sweep: dead at OFF, glowing at HIGH, clicking on and off at the middle settings. During a 5-minute HIGH test the switch body should stay cool to the touch through the panel.
If something is still off#
- Burner stuck on HIGH with the new switch: a LINE and LOAD wire are crossed, or the knob is not turning the internal cam.
- Burner will not heat: check for power at the LINE terminals with a multimeter; no power there means an upstream harness fault.
- Knob feels rough through its positions: the shaft is misaligned with the panel hole, so loosen the nut and re-center it.
- Burning smell during use: shut off power at once, a loose terminal is arcing.
