Fixing an LG stove well starts with LG's specific design. On ProBake Convection models the lower element works alongside the rear-mounted ProBake element during combined cycles, but it stays the sole heat source for standard, non-convection baking — so when it burns out, Bake fails while Broil (upper element) and Convection (rear element) may keep working. Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Confirm the bake element failed#
Set the oven to Bake at 350 degrees F and, if equipped, use LG ThinQ Smart Diagnosis to check for element error codes. Look at the lower element through the window or after a few minutes with the door open: a working element glows red-orange uniformly, and if it does not glow and the oven will not heat in Bake, it has likely failed. To be sure, disconnect power, reach the element terminals from the rear panel, and meter resistance — 20-50 ohms is healthy, OL means failed.
Step 2 — Remove the racks and bottom panel#
Pull all oven racks. On LG models with a removable bottom panel over a hidden bake element, remove the 2-4 screws at the rear of the panel and slide it forward and out. On models with an exposed element on the oven floor, the element mounts directly to the rear wall with two screws and rests on support brackets.
Step 3 — Remove the element mounting screws#
Find the two screws holding the element to the rear oven wall (Phillips or 1/4-inch hex) and remove both. The element is now loose in the cavity; gently pull it forward 3-4 inches to expose the wire terminals at the rear wall, without yanking, since the wires have limited length.
Step 4 — Disconnect the wire terminals#
With the element pulled forward, you can see the two wire connectors on the terminal posts at the rear wall — typically spade connectors or screw-on wire nuts. For spade connectors, grip the metal connector with pliers and pull straight off each post; for screw terminals, unscrew the wire nut or terminal screw and free the wire. Note which wire goes where, though bake elements are non-polarized.
Step 5 — Remove the old element#
With both wires off, pull the old element fully out through the rear-wall hole, where it passes through a grommet or opening — if it catches, wiggle gently while pulling. Inspect the failure point on the old element: you should find a blister, break, or hole in the sheath where the internal resistance wire burned through, which confirms you pulled the right part before the new one goes in. If the old element looks perfect with no visible damage yet tested open on the meter, the break is internal and just as valid a reason to replace it.
Step 6 — Install the new element#
Feed the new element's terminal posts through the rear-wall opening from inside the oven, pushing until the base plate sits flush against the inside of the rear wall with the posts protruding on the back side. From inside the oven, confirm the element rests in the same position as the original — flat on the floor or on its support brackets.
Step 7 — Reconnect the wires and secure#
Reconnect the wire terminals to the element posts, pushing spade connectors on firmly until fully seated, then reinstall the two mounting screws to fix the element to the rear wall. Verify the element does not touch the oven floor, walls, or bottom panel, since a touching element creates a hot spot that can damage the interior.
Step 8 — Reassemble and test#
Reinstall the bottom panel if your model has one, replace the racks, and restore power. Set the oven to Bake at 350 degrees F — the element should glow evenly within 3-5 minutes — and watch for the normal manufacturing-oil smoke or odor on first use. Confirm the oven reaches temperature within 15-20 minutes, and on ProBake models also test Convection Bake to verify the lower and rear elements activate together.
Troubleshooting Common Issues#
- New element does not heat: recheck the wire connections (a loose spade connector is the most common error) and confirm the oven is set to Bake, not Broil or Convection only.
- Element glows unevenly: one leg brighter than the other during initial heating is normal as the legs warm at slightly different rates; if one leg never glows, the element may be defective.
- Oven trips the breaker when the element activates: a short exists — check that no wires are pinched behind the rear wall and that the terminals are not touching the metal oven frame.
- Oven heats but temperature is off: the temperature sensor may need recalibration; LG ovens allow a temperature-offset adjustment through the control panel.
- On ProBake, Bake works but Convection Bake does not fully heat: the ProBake rear element may have a separate failure unrelated to this replacement.
