How to Replace an LG Range Plug-In Coil Burner

Match size and wattage first#

LG coil-tops use two standard elements: a 6-inch small burner, typically around 1250-1500 watts, and an 8-inch large burner, typically around 2100-2600 watts. Check the underside of the old element for its size and wattage stamp and match both. An underpowered element heats slowly; an overpowered one can overheat the receptacle it plugs into.

Pull the old element#

Make sure the control is off and the coil is cool. Grip the outer ring, lift the front edge about an inch, and pull the element straight toward you so the two rear prongs slide out of the receptacle block. If they resist, rock the element gently side to side rather than forcing it, and never bend the coil.

Inspect the prongs and socket#

Look at the prongs you just pulled: clean metal is fine, but pitting, corrosion, or blackening means arcing has been happening, and the receptacle block contacts are probably damaged too. Peer into the receptacle slots — clean, springy contacts are good, while carbon, melted material, or a loose fit means the socket should be replaced along with the element, or the new one will arc the same way.

Seat, level, and test#

1. Line the new element's prongs up with the receptacle slots and push straight back until they seat with firm contact.
2. Check the coil sits flat, about a quarter inch above the drip pan all the way around — an uneven element heats unevenly and rocks cookware.
3. Turn the burner to high; the whole coil should glow uniformly within about a minute, with no dark sections and no sparking at the rear.
4. Expect a little odor or light smoke on the first heat as coatings burn off — run it five minutes empty before cooking.
